Hello, I am relatively new to Kontakt and samplers in general so I may be way off base assuming that what I think Kontakt 5 should be able to do, actually does, but here goes.

I recently purchased the full version of Kontakt 5 from NI and some Kontakt samples, loops etc from Big Fish Audio (BFA). Some of the BFA software is instruments only and I am familiar enough with VST’s etc that I know my way around those to get them to do what I want, however. Some of BFA software also has audio loops that are triggered by Kontakt and play not just a note but a loop and or a phrase, which can run on for several bars of music. See the link below for an example of the sounds etc that the 15 kits has - http://www.bigfishaudio.com/detail.html?1;16;1:::::::::::Drive:515602

My question is this… If I load a kit from this software and press one of the keys on the KB in Kontakt or my midi KB, it plays a riff, or drum pattern or whatever it is I have chosen, that’s great. But how do I tell Kontakt to play (for example) note C1 for 4 bars, cause that’s the drum sound I want there, and then play note E1, cause that’s the next drum sound I want, sort of like a sequencer I guess. So automate the triggering of these items.

The issue is, I can press the KB key but there seems to be a little trail off that happens, and I don’t want that, I want it clean and to go to the next part automatically. Maybe I’m living in a fantasy world, but considering what Kontakt can do, that doesn’t seem too farfetched.

If anyone has an answer or ideas, please help..

Thanks - Tony (the newb)

Typing from my phone right now and I hate typing from my phone but the short answer is record the notes you want in the order and timing you want into a sequencer like Real Band or Power Tracks Pro Audio or any other sequencer and then play those notes, that "song" into Kontak into the channel where you put that loop.

by the way this truly is a topic that you may want to go to the Native Instruments forums for since this more about Kontak and not really about Band in a Box or real band - but we're all glad to help you get contact working with real band and Band in a Box

Ok Larry thank you...and see I learned something about Real Band, I didn't know it was a sequencer so thanks.

It seems that what you have suggested is pretty much what I am looking for. I will try it and see...

Thanks again.

I have K4 and never used it to trigger loops. I generally load the samples for....say cello, or piano, and then play those parts recording the midi data.... similar to playing and recording audio, but with synths.

I use Sonar to play K4 samples. In fact, I was playing around with it last night experimenting with viola and cello parts for something. Didn't hit the record button.

Kontakt is my go to sound source for almost everything!

To answer your C1 to E1 question you will get a tail off using the Kontakt KB as it take a little time to move your mouse from one key to another. But with a MIDI controller you can change the notes at precisely the right time and not get that tail off. Or in a piano roll mode you can write in a C1 and a E1 at the right places.

A little more information about your setup would help tremendously. For instance what DAW are you using? Do you have any kind of MIDI controller such as a guitar or keyboard MIDI controller? What is your audio interface (sound card) and are your drivers for it ASIO or MME? Most of the time you will need ASIO drivers to eliminate latency. Are you using a 64 bit or a 32 bit OS? The more information you can provide the easier it will be to give the correct advise.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

A little more information about your setup would help tremendously. For instance what DAW are you using? - I am using Magix Samplitude 2014 & 2016.

Do you have any kind of MIDI controller such as a guitar or keyboard MIDI controller? - Yes I have an M-audio Axiom 61.

What is your audio interface (sound card) and are your drivers for it ASIO or MME? - My audio interface is a Focusrite Safire Pro 40 running ASIO 64 bit.

Most of the time you will need ASIO drivers to eliminate latency. Are you using a 64 bit or a 32 bit OS? The more information you can provide the easier it will be to give the correct advise.

- So from what you are saying it seems, that I can type in the Piano roll the corresponding KB notes I want to play at the time in the song I want them to be played? That seems to be what I got out of what you said…
- Is this in BB, the DAW or Kontakt?

Thanks

I believe you can use Kontakt in BB and also as a stand alone instrument, if it was installed with that option, although I never use it in either of those ways. It will work exceedingly well in a DAW. I always open it on Sonar to add midi parts to my projects when I need that specific sound or instrument....sampled, of course.

And yes, in a DAW, using both the STAFF view and the PRV, you can type or mouse the notes in to the staff or PRV. Kontakt will play it back just fine. The bigger problem is that you get none of the controller, pedal, or touch data that way. The best way to get that data in is to actually play it on a midi keyboard instrument so that all the extra data points are captured in a real time way.

Since you have a 64bit OS then I am going to assume that your Magix Samplitude is also 64 bit. If not them by all means get a 64 bit DAW as it will make a huge difference with Kontakt. Why? Because the best Kontakt sounds and/or a number of Kontakt sounds will take a lot of ram and with a 32 bit program you can only access about 3.5 gigs of ram total, including all programs and data/sounds. There is a work-around with jBridge but I found it to be a PITA, YMMV.

Herb as already answered your PVR question so my question to you is do you know how to set up Kontakt as a VSTi? It is the same for 32 bit or 64 bit but hopefully you have a 64 bit DAW.

I hope this helps.

Ok guys, thanks for the info...just a question...what is PRV?

I think the staff idea will work for what I want as I do not need the control pedal and other info as I would be triggering previously recorded (sampled) secions that come with their own nuances built in. So the expression pedal etc would have little or no effect anyways. I was just looking for a way to automate what is to be triggered, for different drum, guitar, bass seccions etc. So thanks that will help.

As for my DAW it is 64 bit...

PRV = Piano Roll View
basically it's a piano keyboard on the left as your X axis and time is your Y axis and you can input notes there on the grid.
