Hi all.

Just getting in one more before the year's end. This is the third song in my trilogy and like the last post features my ageing Syntovox vocoder, plus a DX7 - very fitting for this 80s sound.

The drums are a mixture of several Realdrums tracks, plus my own samples sequenced up, with lots of editing involved. The acoustic rhythm is an RT and the rest of the guitars, the bass and keyboards are down to me. Some of you will know that I'm basically a Fender man, through and through, but sometimes a song comes along where you just have to get the Les Paul off the wall and dust it down. This is one of those times!

As usual, the project started in Realband and was mixed and mastered in Powertracks.

Something Strange
Sometimes, the way it works
Without you knowing, a situation goes wrong
It's funny how you never knew that things had changed
Until you turned round and found that he had gone
Just a note, on the wall
Just one word - "Goodbye" says it all.

You try to understand
To work it out, to try to find some reason
But something strange is playing games with your mind
And makes you wonder, perhaps you're glad he's gone
Just a note, on the wall
Just one word - "Goodbye" says it all.

Allways grateful to all those who have time to listen.

Have a great 2016, everyone.

ROG.

Well, ROG...

That sounds like it came right off the radio early '80s... I hope you wore a jacket and skinny tie while you recorded that! ... and there was hair spray involved..

Very cool vocals - tight!... Excellent mix - everything in the pocket.

Super guitar.

Enjoyed that...

I loved this Rog. It could grace any Boston album! Super vocals and tons of major sevenths, Tom Scholz solos, what's not to like!

Great instrumental sounds, especially the piano and the Les Paul solo. That was awesome!!!

This does have an 80s sound but I LOVE the eighties. They could still play back then.

Great big sound!! This song has great impact. I can hear many influences (Beatles, ELO, the WHO). Really interesting changes, great arrangement, and a dynamic mix. A lot of great elements!! Great job ROG!! Take care. Greg

Gosh Dang, ROG ...

We thought this was 2016, not 1986! This great song would have been super in the 80's! You are an amazing talent ... lots of technical skills, yet the ability to deliver as casually as the guy sitting across the room.

Great tone on the guitar ... pretty nice picks, too! We loved it! Happy New Year!

Hi Floyd.
Yeah, I had on the jacket with the shoulder pads and the sleeves pushed up and the tie which I'm wearing in my avatar. No hairspray though. Not enough hair these days! Many thanks for the kind words - you know I always value your input. Cheers.

John, what can I say but many thanks. Boston? Great! Had to go and listen to some more of their stuff after reading that. You'll find a lot of major and minor sevenths in my tracks - I just like that sound. Cheers.

Thanks David. I'd forgotten how good the DX7 piano sounds were until I did this track. Sadly, the DX was only borrowed - may have to buy one of my own. It's not often I choose the Les Paul over my trusty Telecaster, but I think it was the right choice for this song.

You are hittin' the note with that Les!

Super production featuring a great
mix and the kind of perfectly
phrased vocals that we both love.

You've definitely got the "big studio"
feel with this.

Most enjoyable!!!

J&B

BTW, glad you laid off the hairspray....

Hi Alan & Di.
Many thanks for the listen and all the kind things you said. The 80s was a great time for me - we'd just started to get more tape tracks and there was a host of new effects to work with, though they did cost a fortune! Happy days.

Hi J&B.
So kind of you to say those things. It's great that it's possible to get the big studio sound without the big studio these days! Many thanks.

Hi Bob. That vocoder is getting a bit old these days, but as long as it keeps going I'll keep using it. It's a bit addictive. Many thanks for the listen.

We are a little late to this party......
But oh my.... you captured the 80s sounds so very well here!!!!
Love that synth loop, the backing vocals and everything else. The electric guitar solo also starts at the exact right moment.

Great work!

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks

MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:

There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:

1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track
