I hope this has a simple answer, as I've not been able to find a solution. I imported a simple, single instrument midi track into BIAB2014. I made the original midi using musescore and assigned the instrument as 'tenor sax'. As expected, BIAB imported the midi track into the MELODY and plays it correctly as a tenor sax voice. However, I cannot change the voice using the mixer or any other way I would normally change a midi patch.

What's the solution?

Thanks for the help and Happy New Year,

Bob

Bob, if this is a MIDI file not from BIAB but from elsewhere, then it must have the patch number embedded into it. I think RealBand can show and remove those, not sure. Can you post the file and let us play with it?

I sure can Matt, and thanks for the quick response.

The midi file generated from musescore can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0bxr5q9dkyqrx3u/Late_In_The_Evening.mid?dl=0

The BIAB file I made from it can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8ig043ilma114m/Late%20In%20The%20Evening.MGX?dl=0

Once again, thank you.

Bob -

Go into "Notation View" in BIAB. Once there, select the melody track (it will be labeled with the first letter of the instrument shown in the mixer). You'll see the notes for the melody, so you can tell you got the right one.

Then, click on the "#" sign to the right of the instrument buttons. This brings up the MIDI event list.

Scroll to the top of the event list, and you'll see the following MIDI events (which came in from your import):

0:1:000 121 Reset All Controllers Data = 0, Channel 1
0:1:000 Patch Change 67 Tenor Sax Channel 1
0:1:000 7 Volume Data=100 Ch 1
0:1:000 10 Panning Data=64 Ch 1
0:1:000 91 External Effects Depth Data=0 Ch 1
0:1:000 93 Chorus Depth 3 Data=0 Ch 1

Highlight each of these (and only these entries) and in turn click the Delete button until all are gone. Click on the Close button

That will get rid of the hard coded MIDI information from your imported file.

Now, click on the Sequencer button and select "Sequencer on Melody Track".

In the window that pops up, just click OK. Since there will only be one channel in the Sequencer, BIAB will ask if you want to set it back to single channel. Answer "Yes".

Now, you can change instruments to your heart's content via the mixer for the melody channel.

Hope that helped.

Thank you John. Despite using BIAB since the 90's, I don't think I would have ever figured out your solution. Wonderful! (One of the many reasons I read this forum on a daily basis.)

Best,

Hello,

in Biab, the imported Midi files are set on the melody or soloist line.
(you can check this by muting all instruments, one after the other until you reach (in the case of your file) the piano (melody) part). Then you do not hear anything more.

If you now (of course after you cancel the mute button) click on the icon "sequencer" (green circle) you get all available midi instruments of the song. In your case, the sax.

If you now click on the drop menu, you can easily change the instrument, like I did with your file and set it to a clarinet or anything else you like! Get it?
Have fun!

You can use the sequencer feature to change just the instrument patch, but the MIDI file also contained panning, volume, effects, and chorus commands. By deleting them in the event list editor, you regain control over those parameters as well. That's why I didn't just go straight to the sequencer.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
