Seriously, yesterday, we closed on a farm. 28+ acres of land, mostly wooded with a cabin (1400sqft) and some other buildings. We have 20 acres of woodlands behind us for a backyard with 2 year round flowing streams and 8 acres between us and the road. Secluded is the right word to use.

So.... I'm going to be very busy over the next year or so getting this property back into good shape and rehabbing the cabin plus the addition we're planning. My wife wants to raise goats and bees.

The driveway from near the cabin looking towards the road approximately 1000 feet away.

The front of the cabin

The back yard.... goes back about 1500 feet and all wooded. Planning a few acres of cleared pasture back there at some point.

Back of the cabin

Plans are to clean it out and up.... decide what floor plan and addition we want... start the project....finish and move in. Projected time frame is 12 months more or less.

We're excited to be building our retirement home on this amazing piece of land.

Internet.... good question... there's phone service to the cabin.... no cable, but I think TW will run a cable for a fee...and since it's a business expense....

Fights? WE have remodeled this house and did an addition and survived that.... we generally see eye to eye on the remodeling.... I'm not too pickey....I let my wife make the decisions, what color, how high, carpet or tile or wood... and life is good.

Ha...plus....a happy wife = a happy life. smile

Hmmm...have you done sufficient recon as to where the lava lamp recording cave is going to be located?
I'd guess up in the loft but we haven't seen the inside yet?....hint.
I guess the shed could be a possibility too but I would not be enamored with that option.

I was a carpenter for several years so I'm quite familiar with it all.
Sounds like an exciting project so hope all goes smoothly.

Back to it....

Long, long story, but essentially, WE have not even seen the inside of the house. A lady has been living there and she'll be moving out before the end of June. The guy that sold us the land is a well respected local realtor. He said he hasn't even seen inside the house. At the price we paid, we are good with that lack of knowledge. Even if we have to knock it down and start from the ground up, it's a great deal.

But to address the most important room of the house,,,,, yes, there will be a studio/office and the Lava lamp will reside somewhere in that room where it best affects the acoustics in a positive manner.

We'll know more and be able to plan accordingly when she moves and we can have a look inside. And yeah... I know how absolutely crazy that sounds.

Not necessarily, knowing your perception of the deal you got and your approach being remodeling anyway.
You may even blow out some non-load bearing walls with your new interior layout ideas.
Should be a cool project to tackle and see it evolve into your (and family's) comfort zone.

Keep this thread updated for us interest only blokes.

Carry on....

Congratulations on your new purchase.

PS - I am very jealous now. I would love to have something like what you just bought.

Congratulations. It all looks really nice.

Suggesting you may want to look at a small log cabin. They are kits, some are modular homes with log exterior. They can be completed quickly and there are no surprises....

There are two dealers just above you on I-95 at Rocky Mount.

I've done it twice now. 11 acres in the mountains and the 60 acre family farm.

I put a modular log cabin on the mountain land. The SF pricing was similar to remodel pricing.

I am sufficiently envious .. mostly because of the room to roam.
Congrats.

Hoping it all works out well for you; I don't think I'd have the faith to buy without seeing inside .. unless you got it for pretty much the going price of the land in the area.
If you have something else to sell (if needed) you should be in great shape.

We're considering selling a couple parcels to do much the same thing soon; here's to hoping I am as lucky as you when the time comes.

as Rharv said, "I am sufficiently envious"

but I'd be surveying that property for best spots to put in M18A1's (Claymores) and lying out acoustic and IR sensors (NO, I'm not real sociable grin )

Good Luck

Good for y'all. We've lived in the deep woods on acreage for 30 years. I couldn't imagine a neighborhood. There's always something that needs attention but it's worth the time and effort we put into it. We don't have a cabin but our smallish house has heart pine floors and walls and us cabin like.

Congrats and here's to years of happiness there.

To answer a few questions...

It's 10 minutes from our current house, so travel to Wilson takes 10 minutes more than it does now....

BUT... on the other hand, it's closer to Zebulon & Raleigh.... with a Walmart just 8 minutes up the road....and a Lowes too, I think.

Incursions by "unfriendlies" Oh yeah..... I'm on that already. We have a couple hundred feet of country road/ 2 lane highway frontage... As neighbors to the south on the other side of the stream is all woods and farm fields that have been in the families for generations... not likely to get a subdivision in there.... besides, Middlesex is a small town. Very small. It has one stop light....a bank, a resturant, a hardware store, a post office and a gas station..... and a few more but not many more...Just a bit bigger than my current town. To the north, we have a cow farm and pretty much the same... houses on lots that are a few acres, wooded towards the back where they abut ours. Unless someone is very dedicated, they would take the path of least resistance and that's up the driveway.... I'll be installing my early warning sensors in that area. Wireless outdoor motion. In addition, since I'm in the security business, there will be cameras and Alarmnet notification back there. I'll know someones back there before they realize where they are. I'll also be posting signage.... "My German Shepherd can cover 100 feet in 2.3 seconds, can you?" .... but I really doubt I'm going to have problems back there with folks.

We're excited.... and we know there's a lot... a whole lot of work that needs to be done... but we've done rehab work on old houses before so we know what's involved.

AS I start through the process, I will be documenting it in pictures and video.... I'll keep folks who are interested in following the progress, posted.

Tomorrow.... the sun is supposed to be out and cooler temps.... so I will be heading out with my GPS and machete to locate and remark if necessary, the iron pipes on the property lines and corners. I'll be cutting the first perimeter property line walking path.

THis song from the past has been on my mind for the last several.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmIZL5YqXrQ

congratulations Herb! I'm jealous! I grew up living on 40 acres on the side of a mountain, and I miss it! Put my name on the list of people who wants to be kept in the loop about the project!

congrats. but here's one person that reminds you to be careful of what you dream for. You may wake up & find it a nightmare!. Been there. done that. Now I want a couple of things I can't find in the country. Like natural gas to the house, garbage pickup, city water, on the grid electricity. You get the point. I've pretty much found what I want in small town, but still miss Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Dave Famus Barbeque. Again, you get the idea. Man, I'm so tired of being only able to shop at Walmart!! Now this isn't to say I might not get me a small cabin in the woods as a second home in the future but I'm never going back to the country full time again.

Have fun. I'll enjoy following your experiances here.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
