Sorry I haven't been around too much lately. I only did two BIAB songs last fawm and one is locked by the lyric writer (she had promised it to someone outside of FAWM already). Here is an old one from 2009. I maybe had BIAB for2 months or so, so the mix is "eh". I'll post the newer FAWM one in a while. This one is my only "war" type song, mostly a civil war story. It seems the only one semi-appropriate fro Memorial Day. I'll be commenting on the other memorial day songs while I am here.

Note: I just found this recording in the "off-topic" section -- that was before the user showcase forum was available.

Old and Gray
© Emmrich/Leach 2009

Saddle up the horses and count those who fell
and boost me up so I can ride
The spirit’s willing, but the ammo and food are low
And we’re on the losing side

But rally ‘round the Flag, boys
Cause we’re all gonna die some day
I hope it will be back in Mississippi, yea
When I'm old and gray

Oh to be back in Mississippi, surrounded by my wife and sons
the deep rich earth and the clear blue sky
Heaven's worth fighting and dying for
so let's show those bluecoats what hell is like

Rally ‘round the Flag, boys
Cause we’re all gonna die some day
I hope it will be back in Mississippi, yea
When I'm old and gray

Well we whooped ‘em on up at Manassas
and I thought it would be over fast
And I'd be home soon

So, rally ‘round the Flag, boys
Cause we’re all gonna die some day
I hope it will be back in Mississippi, yea
When I'm old and gray
I hope it will be back in Mississippi, yea
When I'm old and gray

Bethan Mathis: Backing Vocals

Hi Kevin.

We here on the southernmost tip of Africa know very little of the American Civil War. But I have seen enough pictures from my old National Geographic’s our library and even TV documentaries,, to make one wince at the carnage of young and old alike, brother, cousin, childhood friend, cut down in rows, yet sometimes laying on opposite side trenches.
Your song makes that so vivid again. Well played, well sung and very poignant.

600,000 dead including two of my g-g-g-grandfathers. I've been involved in a host of
CW historical projects over the decades. Most folks of our era have no concept of
the carnage and how practically every family, north and south, were effected.

Janice and I have written CW songs and listened to many over the years. We like this
song very much and there is nothing to apologize for regarding the mix. It sounds
fine.

Yep, we're all gonna die someday but for those boys all too often it was on a field
fighting for that elusive concept of honor or for a cause many never even
understood. It was a helluva way to get there but we emerged stronger and
assuredly more free.

Pardon the ramble. These songs do that to the two of us!

Very nice tune.

This is cool. I actually like mix. The dynamics are good and it is not "over-produced" or "excessively mastered"--there is a clear separation of instruments and sounds.

There is some processing effect causing it to sound just a wee bit watery or thin in places, but that is very mild, not really a problem and I can't tell exactly what is is, but I would much rather listen to to this than something that blows my ear drums out.

Good job!!

Kevin,
this is very good work, a good choice of RTs, which sound very well-balanced.
Good vocals and backing vocals too

Pretty tidy recording and mix Kevin.
Being from Australia I can't comprehend the Rebel nostalgia but I like your melody and voice.
The backing vocals seem oddly mixed - wandering about as if through a Leslie speaker or Univibe pedal. I think they'd sound fine settled in one spot - preferably 20-30% Left or right so they don't crowd and blur the main vocals.

Cheers

Hi Kevin,

I've been a fan of your song writing since before I was even on the BIAB site... I think I first heard you on Song Ramp about 10 years ago or more. The fact that I remember YOU specifically from the sea of other songwriters on that site is already significant.

Your songs consistently appeal to me with a quality that somebody else here described as "organic". Yeah, that works.

You strike me as a very unpretentious song writer who has good ideas and who relentlessly continues to develop the craft of song writing through collaborations and your presence on various song writing sites. You inspire me in a variety of ways. I hope to continue hearing your songs for years to come.
