Hi all,

The wife wants surround sound speakers - so she can watch movies with 'theater' sound.

Of course - we will be listening to music through these also.

In previous posts I've asked about speakers - but not the dual use for music and TV/Movies.

Anybody recently do any research or have any suggestions ? We have small rooms - so really big speakers are out of the question - leading me to consider the very pricey Bose (and though I'm not happy about the price they probably fit the bill for size and sound quality). The only minus is our dining room and living room are separated by a partial wall - just where the speakers would sit - so it would seem that listening to music in the dining room would not be as good with a system designed for specific seating and head placement. Oh well - maybe some sort of multi-room speaker thing, even wireless.

...would love your suggestions.

Go to the Big Box stores like Best Buy and audition them in the store. Buy a system that you like.

As far as what I did..... I bought the receiver/amp and used the speakers I had already. Added some home made subs and waaa laaa.... Note: I don't use it often but when I do, it's usually because my wife isn't home and I can crank it up. Love to watch concerts on it.

Perhaps this will help. Surround speakers don't actually have to be behind you to have good effect. The nominal rear speakers can simply be placed outboard of the front left and right speaks to work. I have experienced this in a small space and was frankly astonished at how well it worked. I'm about to do it myself in my own small living room with an inexpensive LG 5.1 Blu-Ray system. As GH suggested above, mine was Best Buy clearance item for $215. It claims 1000 watts (likely around 200 WRMS), which is plenty for our purposes.

Joe,

I'm very happy with my Barry MS 40 Monitor Speakers and a pair of old Gateway computer speakers connected as a stereo setup. Bass response is awesome and I don't need a sub woofer for excellent bass.

The Barrys were about $200 from Amazon about a year ago.

Fellow forumite, Mac, also endorsed the MS-20s, smaller version.

Joe, there is no best one setup without knowing room dimensions, listening position, etc.

Tons of online resources to help you through the process of properly designing a surround sound setup. The basics of room dimensions and where you plan your primary listening position(s) should be part of the discussion. If a resource is not telling you to consider those items, move along to a site that does.

Buy from a local store (reasonable driving distance) that offers a 100%, no questions asked, 30 day (or more) return guarantee.

Joe,

Consider Garage/Estate sales. You live in a goldmine of vintage, near-mint gear.

The system doesn't have to be matched to sound good (as long as impedance/power matches). I put a system together with (2) “vintage” Fisher 10”/3-ways, (2) Cerwin Vega 8”/2-ways, a Sony center speaker and a Yamaha powered sub, running off a “vintage” Fisher 5.1 Surround receiver.

Total Cost? About 150 bucks. Sound? Killer. grin

As for your sound in your dining room, just run a couple of speakers from the “B” side on your amp. Or, you could go wireless:

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bob

Joe, I agree with 90DB. You're in NY, I'm in LA. I can find anything, literally anything that I may be interested in used within 20 miles of me off Craigslist. You can too.

All you need is a modest surround receiver and some speakers. You could find a good Yamaha, Panasonic, Samsung whatever receiver for $100 or so. Your sats can be either mounted on a wall or on 3' stands. Just build it up using individual parts like start with your two mains for stereo first, look for sats later if you can't find the whole set used in one shot.

You can put together a system that would cost $1,000 new for a few hundred. Oh, forget the Bose. Way overpriced for what it is but they do sound ok so if you find one at a good price fine, but people want too much for them.

Just did a quick search and found this on Long Island:

https://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/ele/5680973501.html

Denon is good stuff, this is perfect for you for $250. New this could have been $1,000.

Here's another one, a full Yamaha system, $250:

https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/ele/5682832372.html

There should be all kinds of choices in your area.

The systems that are all plasticy looking with loud colors or lights are usually cheap crap.

If you don't know anything about this stuff then post whatever you're looking at here before you buy it. Several of us can tell you if it's good or not assuming nothing is blown after a listening test.

Thanks everyone for the great advice - I actually have some items that are not properly hooked up, and I'm going to do that first and then evaluate - I have a Harmon Kardon lowest entry point receiver that I bought 10+ years ago, a Klipsch subwoofer and center , and what I think is probably the weekes link - 2 Mitsubishi stereo speakers model SS-70 donated by my brother-in-law (Probably 20+ years old).

Somehow - the back of our entertainment system is in a corner also used for storage - resulting in continually disconnecting of wires !!! First step is a clear working area.

I just looked up those Mitsu's and the last retail price was $50. I assume that was each. They might be decent sounding, try 'em and see. A Klipsch sub and center could be ok too but like JBL and others they now have their cheapo "consumer" line and their famous audiophile line. Huge difference between them.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
