About as close to a rock song as I`ve done so far, this was written 20yrs ago but had a redo after I began listening to the Waterboys. I tried to get close to their great wild fiddle folkrock sound here.

Things You Didn`t Say
( Robert Cordrey, April 2016)

you were a dark horse on a good day
a black sheep on the rest
its too late to learn
too late to learn

I watched you from the barricades
ride back into the flames
I felt you burn
I felt you burn

I was painting the rainbow
when you shot the waterfall
I saw you turn
I saw you turn

you became a poem
the blazing ember of a day
so I became the poet
of the things you didn`t say

my heart was racing
reading Dharma Bums
I heard you cry
I heard you cry

from your lockup in Tangier
flying too close to the sun
I closed your eyes
I closed your eyes

you became the moon
your shadow falls far away
that`s how I found the box
of the things you didn`t say

you became a poem
the blazing ember of a day
so I became the poet
of the things you didn`t say

Nice write and arrangement all wrapped up in an Americana production. Americana has become a large tent and captures a lot of good music now days. You are in good company.

We enjoyed it!

Robert,

Very cool song and sound. As the others have said, this fits in very nicely with the Americana genre - enjoyed it.

Bob, Janice & Bud - Many thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed the song!
I`ve just had a read on Wikipedia about Americana... not really knowing the term it seems I`ve been listening to the genre for most of my life . Many of my favourite artists are in that bag, and now I get how trying to sound like an Irish folk rock group could fit in there.

Very well written and delivered!! Really interesting lyrics-reminds me of the 60's/70's writers I love so much. I like the vocal processing. Nice job!! Take care. Greg

Hi Robert,

A very confident presentation indeed. I like the harmony. One thing is for sure, you have a great ability to create very visual phrases. That's quite a skill you have!

All the best,
Noel

Thanks very much, Greg.
No matter how much I listen to current music I`m forever stuck hearing and no doubt trying to recreate the songs of back then... why fight it!

Thanks Noel,
I had fun with the vocals on this ... a bit out of my comfort zone so I`m glad the result sounds confident.
I credit a lifelong reading habit for any lyrical ability... and disguising sources, of course!

"...the box
of the things you didn`t say"

A very interesting lyric all the way through., Robert.

And a good sound to wrap it in.

Great song Robert! Incredibly powerful lyrics. I'm just dying to hear them darker, over a slow bluesy accompaniment. Maybe something with a harmonica soloist? You know, the kind of harmonica that gives you "feels"... (_AcBlz2 Slow Blues for example).

Alyssa,

The lyrics are very personal so I`m glad they resonate. Slower & bluesier?... never thought of that, but I like the harp idea & do plan to rerecord the song sometime.

Robert,

Floyd said it earlier as a comment on the other song you posted. There is something Leonard Cohen like in your lyrics and singing rhythm. A little bit stronger in this one.
Now both me and Anne-Marie are huge Cohen fans, so you have our attention ;-)
