Rather than using the metronome I like to have a click track, something that sounds similar the count in you get with real drums. I can't figure out how to create one, though, so I've just been copying and pasting the introductory (1-2-3-4) clicks from the real drum track. This is a pain in the neck.

I went through the tutorial for editing or creating a real drum track but it all seems very complicated. All I want is a real drum track that clicks on the beat. Am I missing something? If anyone has a suggestion on how to do or create this I would appreciate it very much!

(I'm using this for bluegrass which is why I'm not interested in having a full drum track)

Thanks.

one tine only

copy the count in to a track and duplicate for the length you need then as stated in the manual

Save As Template
File templates make it easier for you to begin new projects by selecting from a list of available templates (instead of
from a completely blank slate). The templates can contain preferred track layouts, preferred song settings, and,
since templates are stored in .SEQ format, they can even contain MIDI or audio backing tracks. You can create your
own custom templates simply by using the File | Save As Template command.

or

Save Song as Default Template
This will save the song as $OPTIONS.SEQ so that the song will be loaded automatically whenever starting a new song with the File | New command.

This won't work very well for songs in different tempos.

The trick is to have a midi click.

I use click.mid
It is a file I made of just a sidestick click for 100 bars. Great for writing songs.
here-
http://masteringmatters.com/samples1/click.mid

This way you can easily adjust the tempo for any project.

Typical new project start procedure here-
Open click.mid
set tempo of song
'save as' a seq file with song name
start laying tracks

You can always adjust the tempo if you use midi.
Much more difficult with a realtracks audio click
Another benefit is being able to send midi to any synth - great for when you need a LOUD click for a drummers headphones.
It's often difficult to get an audio track click loud enough for the drummer and still be able to hear the drums you are recording. But sending the click to an external synth, then a headphone amp can make for a really loud click.
Had times when they kept saying 'I need it louder' until I eventually I made 'em whince. <grin>
Then he gave me the thumbs up! .. and that universal drummer signal for 'roll it'
ya know, where they make a circle with their sticks and look at ya like you're suppose to know what they are thinking...
Personally, I was thinking "are you nuts?!? That click is gonna make yer ears ring for days"...

This may not be what you want, but why not try "Edit, Fill Track with MIDI Drum Pattern". I know it's not a RealTrack instrument, but if all you're looking for is a glorified metronome, then why not go with MIDI. And you can easily convert it to audio, if you wish.

There's a couple of BlueGrass patterns in the drop-down list. You tell it which patttern, which track to use, and how many bars to use. Of course, you'll need a MIDI synthesizer for this, but this seems the easiest to me and will give you a little variation over the built-in metronome.

"Edit, Fill Track with MIDI Drum Pattern". Amazing what you learn reading these posts I'm sure the feature has been there all along just never noticed it!

That feature is also in PowerTracks (and has been there awhile, but I can't say exactly for how long). So it carried forward into RealBand.

You could also make a BIAB style or even a couple different ones with just ( whatever inst. you want ) then use the generate MIDI track. I do this to get the Kick drum I want to coincide with my bass part.

Fill track with drums came in around version 4 or 5 of Powertracks.
The rhythm patterns are just mid files renamed to the dp extensions, if I recall correctly.

There is a big difference between a ready-made drum track and a click track, especially if a drummer needs to play along with it.

Every studio should have a click source ready to be called upon at any tempo at any time.
I've gotten a lot of mileage out of click.mid, and I know of a few other studios that thanked me for it too. It is such a simple thing to construct, guess some people just don't think of it.

BTW you can also tap a key in PT and RB to set the tempo if so desired...the program will set the tempo with as little as four taps.

The most recent advancement in PT/RB tempo control is the AudioChordWizard, which will analyze an audio file and create the tempo map for it, even if it waivers; the program makes tons of tempo adjustments (into the thousandths of a beat per minute even). Then sends that map back to the programs tempo window..

There's also a ClickTrack BIAB Style available from PGMusic. Since RealBand can load BIAB styles, that's another possibility.

Now yer talkin!

It should be adjustable for tempo and uses a nice crisp sound.
I've found that when using the VSC DXi as the mid source for a click it helps to cut the reverb down to 0, the default is 20% I think. Then an instance of PGPeakLimit in the Track FX can make it really stand out.

Really you can just insert a sidestick on each beat of one measure and copy/paste it as long as you need it. Homemade click track.

Would using this style hamper using other styles later?

I would think you could load the Click Track style, then either move the click "track" to another track or render to wav (moving it lets you change tempos, length of song, etc). Then load another style for the song.

Just a thought.

I appreciate the suggestions. Using a midi click track seems like the best solution for me. The only problem is that I'm using asio4all as my asio driver and it doesn't seem to work with both midi and real audio tracks...

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
