What would Saturday night be without a country drinkin' song. Willie and Merle turned me on to country in the early 80s with an album called Pancho and Lefty - one cut I tried to model this new song after to a degree . . . Reasons To Quit. I finally wrote a drinkin' song.

The link may take a second or two to play, IE7 may or may not work, everything else should.
As always, comments and suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks

That's a cool song Ian. Sounds like something Merle would come up with.

Hey Ian,

The link works fine for me in Mozilla Firefox.

Good song, good vibe and good presentation. I really like ease with which you slipped between singing and talking. This style really suits your voice and your delivery.

Regards,
Noel

For those who have given the song a listen, I thank you for your comments. Hopefully I'm getting better at this.
I really wanted this to sound like a guy telling a story - probably the fact that I'm a lazy singer makes it easier to slip from sing to talk.

Not often enough do I mention the software I use - PowerTracks and BIAB with a couple of RTs and an RD set. The soloist is generated and tweaked in BIAB and PT. Of course there are a few freeware plugins used. This time I put the whole band mix in Room Machine844 - a digital room simulator set to 20 sq.m.

Yup - "dang this IS addictive", Toucher.

Cheers

Hi Ian!

I'm sorry I kind dropped out of site. Still going thru a divorce which is taking way to much of my time. Been out of a music mood for a while. I stopped by tonight and really like your song. It had a good feel, and was nicely produced. I had a drink, (well deserved) while I listened, and got into the lyrics. Good Job!

Hey Gene - good to hear from you. It has been a while. Too bad you're going through this - during my time I found the music sustained me, my angst turned into songs - a musical diary so to speak. It's a tough time - balancing kids, work, legal matters - only so many hours. Look after yourself.

Ian, where can I find free room simulators like that?

Sam - as requested.

http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:RoomMachine_844 - this is the company that makes it - download, free.

Also KVR is good as is wareseeker.com. But I think the RoomMachine844 is more than adequate.
Happy Tweaking.

Cool song Ian! I like the way you develop the story.
Would really like to hear you do that with some studio musicians.

Wouldn't I love that. I think I'd be a little intimidated by them. But it would be Mick.
Had a lot of fun writing the lyrics, thanks for the feedback.

Great song.
It would however sound even better with some RealTracks. The MIDI is just a bit too obvious imho.

A personal thought of mine on the performance: The whole song is written from a first-person point of view. In fact the whole dialog takes place in your own head. Perhaps you might want to sing the first part "Could I use a drink?" (a question you ask yourself) and then you ponder in a speaking voice "probably not"
There are more of these moments in the song, but don't highlight them all! I think you definatly want to both questions in the the first verse (as mentioned above) like this. And also the last line in the song (only the last one) : [singing]"It's been a hard day" (looking for an excuse) [talking]"and I could drink five" (give yourself permission)

I hope I made it clear what I mean, but if not: don't hesitate to ask!

GREAT story and vox. I liked the backing piano, bass and drums. The pedal steel was spot on. BUT you MUST replace that midi guitarist IMHO. Maybe a real one or some RTs.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Mike, crazzycat, Mario - Thanks for the input. The strumming guitar in this is RT Hank something. The drums are RD Country Shuffle. If I could have gotten Willie for the session you would not be hearing Midi Nylon Guitar. In fact if I could have gotten Merle, you would not be hearing ME! Thanks Mike for the vocal suggestions - I was actually trying to subtly do just that - it's interesting to hear another person's approach to one of my songs.

The BIAB soloists are great and I needed that style of playing (Willie nylon style) for the lead part. Maybe one day the RT soloists will evolve to the point where the midi soloists are. Besides I think that the MIDI Nylon Guitar voice is pretty good. Maybe we need a seminar on how to cloak midi guitar.

BTW I've ordered both Country RT Paks - move over Nashville - the band's here.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
