I do not want BIAB to choose its own substitute chords or to add notes to a chord not specified in my chord symbols.

How do I shut this off?

In BIAB 2005 (which is where I have been since about 2006) under the big S you could ask it not to add notes to chords, and I like that. Now I cannot find that equivalent feature in BIAB 2017.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Version 2017: Try EDIT > CHORDS > AUTO-GENERATE CHORD SUBSTITUTIONS .... Remove checkmark from box named "include subs with chords each beat" and change % to substitute from default of 70 to 0.

EDIT > PREFERENCES > ARRANGE > NATURAL ARRANGEMENTS (RE_INTERPET COMPLEX CHORDS) set to disable.

Something else to try, too...

Right-click on the chordsheet and select 'Song Settings'.

There are two options within song settings that promote chord substitution when enabled. I've highlighted those on the image below. Simply disable them.

Thanks Noel, I remembered the screen but could not remember how to get to it.

You guys rock! This worked perfectly!

There was a place where I had Ab13 with the melody note on the natural 13th, and it was giving me a b13 (or +5) on the Ab chord, which was stinking the place up. There was also a Gb13 chord that was producing a b9 and again, clashed with the melody note which was the natural 9, and about sent me into the psyche ward!

So again, thanks so much for your expertise and your help!

Hi,

Just purchased BIAB 2022 Mega Pak. Have followed all your above suggestions that seemed to sort my A13 chord that included an unwanted #9 but now cannot get a straight A7 without the unwanted #9 included. I am tearing my hair out with it as it clashes horribly. All attempts at retyping and reloading fail to solve the issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

One thing to try is this setting, from Options > Preferences. You may need to experiment with the settings.

As above. Also, this will sound like I’m making a mistake but try A9. This forces the natural nine so BIAB cannot substitute a flatted or sharped nine. And of course this assumes you are willing to hear the natural nine as well as the dominant seven.

Can a contributor explain the curious (to me) phrase: "Natural Arrangements (re-interpret complex chords)"?

With this set, the program can intelligently choose alternative chord voicings to the one that is set in the chord chart. Little is known about the internal operations, however, generally it will replace a very complex chord with a simpler variation.

As VideoTrack said, we don’t know how it works. I think that it is more likely to allow longer phrases because it does appear to simplify the chords, and that makes it more likely to find longer prerecorded phrases of comping.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
