At any measure in a song, I can use F5 to get to the "Edit Settings for the Current Bar" pop-up. In that pop-up, under volume changes, I see that you can change the volume of a particular instrument within a range of -127 to 127.

My question is: is this absolute or relative to the volume the instrument is set at in the main mixer window? That is, if the main mixer window has the piano set at 90 and I set the "Edit current bar" setting to 115, is this the same as setting the mixer to CC7 115?

If this is absolute, what happens when I set the "Edit current measure" setting to "0" is that the same as CC7 "0"....no sound

What are the negative numbers for? CC7 can't be negative right?

If the settings are relative to the original setting of 90, how do I judge the impact of setting it somewhere in the -127 - 127 range?

I guess I don't understand what the range (-127 - 127) is allowing me to do.

Any help is appreciated.

Jeff

My interpretation is that -127 == +127 works the same as a fader on a mixer with -0- being unity gain.

That means the -0- setting neither increases gain nor reduces gain. If you open that dialog and enter -0-, nothing happens. The volume remains the same.

Entering a positive number greater than -0- and the volume of that track increases proportionally relative to the size of the input number. Doing the same with a negative number decreases the volume proportionally the same. Change the gain from the normal setting by -127 fades to zero.

OK, Charlie, I think I understand where you're going with this.

So if I'm working with the piano track and the mixer window is showing an initial volume of 90 and I enter a -64 for the volume change using "Edit Settings for Current Bar" at a particular bar does that effectively drop the output volume to 45 from there forward?

Thanks for your help Charlie.

That's not what I found to be the case in testing. I soloed an acoustic strumming RealTrack with a mixer level of 90.

Opening Bar settings, I generated the track with all settings normal so that Change By -0- = mixer setting of 90.

After two bars at that setting, I used the Change By setting to -64 and the sound nearly disappeared.

Returning to the mixer on the main screen, I changed the volume setting to 127.

I regenerated the track at the setting of 127 and when the regenerated track go to the measure where I used Change By with the setting of -64. The sound nearly disappeared the same as with the main screen mixer setting of 90.

This indicates to me that the bar setting Change By feature does not correlate to corresponding midi CC values.

I use this setting to make changes in the volume of the track relative to the overall volume of the song. I change the volume by ear and adjust until the volume is at the relative volume in relation where I want that particular instrument to be placed in volume with the other tracks of the entire song.

For instance, I may raise a guitar up in volume when it plays a solo and is considered the main focus of the song. At the end of the solo, I lower the volume back to it's original setting so at that point, the lead vocal as it comes back in, becomes the prominent sound in the mix.

Right, that's what I'm finding too Charlie. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it...at least nothing consistent and predictive. Kinda a hit or miss kinda thing that you just have to play with. I'm OK with that too, just thought that there might be something behind the scenes that I was missing that would allow me to better dial in a track prior to regen.

Do appreciate your help and support here Charlie.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
