"she put him out like the burning end of a midnight cigarette", there is so much in that one line that starts"Whiskey Lullaby" that makes me feel I should put down my pen, close the door and jump off a figurative songwriters cliff. Then something hits me, a smell, or sound and I get charged up all over again.
Whether or not my wife and I ever write a song that goes beyond our church or just our own home, the emotions that they evoke are all that is important.
Bill Anderson also wrote the truly great, tour De'force, opus..."Peel Me a Nanner".
Where does it come from, only God knows, but I surly love it.

David and Noel, this may sound a bit odd, but I can tell your approach in both of your results. Your songs, to me, fit your approaches.

They also, no surprise, seem to fit your personalities. What I like about that is, your songs are truly an extension of who you are. To me, that means genuine! That is hard for many writers to get to!

Thanks Caaron. I guess I remain science-based at heart.

Ever since I can remember, making music has always been straightforward for me. Lyrics, on the other hand, were a mystery. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't discover out how to make words work properly.

Then, early in the 2000s, I went along to a weekend seminar with Pat Pattison. That seminar was extremely eye-opening. Pat's approach to lyrics was scientific (analytical and methodical). This gave me a glimmer of how to make them work for me. I've since been to over 20 seminars with Pat and using the techniques that he taught me, writing lyrics became possible. I continue to learn.

In January 2012, Pat conducted a seminar here in Melbourne where he launched his new book "Songwriting Without Boundaries". This book is a collection of exercises aimed at helping lyricists find their voice. The exercises require 56 days of practice that range from 30 - 60 minutes daily. It's quite a chore to work through them all!

Following Pat's release of the above book, and with Pat's permission, I put together a website that allowed a handful of us here in Melbourne to work through his book's exercises online. Not all of us made it to the end. Those who did, though, found it one of the most beneficial learning journeys ever undertaken. It was these exercises more than anything else that helped me discover how to be 'me' in my lyrics.

I still have the website and I've revisited the exercises a couple of times since then (for a top up) and it has always been worthwhile. Which reminds me, it's probably time to go through them again!

It's funny, what you have described is EXACTLY the approach I use when I am writing a book, or a short story, or something like that, either fiction or non-fiction, something in prose.

But in Music, I go the opposite direction. First and foremost I am trying to go that that mystical, spell-binding place where crazy lives. smile

I am looking for a certain kind of energy. Once I find that energy, and the thing has a pulse, then I start breaking it down. For me the analytics come last, as an editing phase.

This is very interesting though, how different people use different approaches. Extremely interesting.

In reference to writing a book, etc., I use the same approach as you. I've written 5 novels and the approach works well for me.

The most interesting thing for me is that writing lyrics got me into writing novels. One day I realized that the lyric to many songs, particularly in Country & Folk genres, is a book in a hundred words are less. Why not tell the details in 65,000 - 90,000 words? So I did. Now I'm always arguing with myself whether to work on a new song or get to one of my novels in progress.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
