HI all If this is not in the right place perhaps the mod can move it.
Well at last I have a Yamaha XG lite VST for your PC & BIAB Many of you Yamaha Keyboard owners must like me have wished for a XG voice set VST, having struggled with sound font players and way back XG50 and 100 soft synths, all of which suffer from dreadful latency problems and often relied on MIM|E drivers. This DLL has been striped from another now defunct Yamaha mid Radio Player I think! This is the Yamaha XG lite set, so only the best 361 voices of the full 480 full XG
Note: This VST has no GUIs so you'll need to operate the patch controls via virtual MIDI ports within your DAW.
No problem in BIAB as there is a built in PAT for a DGX 203-205 in the midi setting synth /sound card setting. THIS IS FOR THE XGLITE SET so that’s good enough to give you access to the upper banks by name.
Just download from my box net and unzip put the resulting folder in your VST folder and don’t forget to add it to your BIAB vst plugins I have made mine my default synth as the bank 0 voices are fully compatible with GM So the all midi styles sound great as well.
I will upload my DGX620 XG lite Sona ins file that I wrote some years back for those that may want it for a more recent DGX keyboards, and a BIAB PAT when I have converted it in the next few days ‘
But not sure it is an improvement for me as my ears have always like the CoyoteForte GM. I am guessing one may have a preference for XG if they grew up with it?
“I am guessing one may have a preference for XG if they grew up with it?”
Well for me its more a case of having lots of XG midi files that I have made over the years on Various Yamaha keyboards .so it is useful for me to hear the higher bank voices I so often used . When importing into BIAB. EG I am quite fond of Piano and strings in the XG 40 bank as a replacement for the default XG GM piano at the same patch in bank 0 and have used it in many of my midis Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts I appreciate it Have fun Mike
Well not much interest here then I feel like the invisible man. 80 views a dozen or so downloads and one comment.
I guess there are not to many Yamaha keyboard players on here that don’t use their keyboard for playback , by far the best way, but not always possible if away from it with just the laptop and BIAB.
I wont bother with the pat file and ins file then.
I know a lot of the regular posters do not play keyboards and it is not a keyboard forum so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s always difficult for a newbie member to hit the right spot on posting, with so many pro musicians out there, but it’s a bit cold on the outside as a home hobbyist. I thought I might contribute something. Ah well.

You are kidding, right? It has been one day and you are having a problem because only one person, in one day, made a comment?
I just found this post, so I, for one, will give this a try. Back in the day a Yamaha SW1000XG with a few daughter cards was my ultimate goal for a Midi card in my studio, and even today I look every now & then for one on eBay. Right now there are some on there STILL asking a large price, and if I was willing to set up an old XP system I would grab one.
I am not a keyboardist, but I DO like the XG sound set better than the Roland SC55 from the old days, or most of the newer Midi sound sets.....including ones that folks use live.
I appreciate the upload, and will post back after I get to try it out next week. Thanks!

Mike, ya don't need to bring anything to the forum except a occasional good word, good wishes or a bit of good info, as you did this time. Stick in there...
I have not had time to reply since I have been having so much fun with your VST. I absolutely love it. As a long time user of the old Yamaha SW1000 sound card, I eagerly looked at your VST file with anticipation. I loaded it up in BIAB and tried out some of my old MIDI song files and was very impressed by the sounds, especially the banjo, since I am a bluegrass musician.
Your VST file is now a permanent resident on my PC!
By all means please send on your PAT and INS files.
Also please don't see the lack of response as an indication that nobody cares about your topic. Not everyone gets on the forum each day and those who do like me, might take a while to respond. In my case, you came back with a verdict before I had a change to respond.
One of the forum topics I am always looking for is for anything dealing with softsynths, especially when it pertains to anything Yamaha XG related since my association with both the SW1000 and the DBXG50 daughter card go way back to the days of Windows 95.
Hopefully you will reconsider and will send on your PAT and INS files for those who would love to check them out.
As far as you not thinking you contributed anything to the forum worthwhile, oh on the contrary Mike. You made my day when I saw your post.
And ditto on what jcspro40 also said on the topic. We both know the value of what you have shared with us.
Well what a difference a day makes (cue song). Thanks very much for your appreciations I am so pleased that some folks found this useful. The DGX620 instrument def can be found and downloaded from my web site, (see bottom of post) item 5 in my technical articles section, via a boxnet link. It is a simple mater to convert this to a Pat in BIAB. This is the file for the full DGX620 Keyboard for those who may have it or similar and as such contains all the Panel voices in banks LSB 113 etc. Obviously you won’t get these from the VST as it is just the XGlite set However if you play a Yamaha midi that uses these high banks it will fall through to the equivalent voice in XG bank 0. All XGlite set will play with the correct sounds.
Thanks Mike I have yet to try it (just downloaded it) but it appears about the same size as Chaos SF and I look forward to checking out the sounds. I'm buried in other work currently, so it may be a bit before I try it, but I appreciate your effort a lot. Thanks again.
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
I've got around 900 XG files (donated to me) that I have never used successfully because I've always been a GM/GM2 guy and only have Roland keyboard and GM synths. I'll be trying it out in near future as time permits. Thanks for your contribution to the music nerd world.
Got it loaded up, but as of today have only had a few min to play with it....Thank You for this! I can now explore some of the Midi styles that are newer than 2011 because, to put it bluntly, I could not stand the sound of them for my use.
Now I just might be able to use some of them in my Rhythm sections.....Thanks Again!

Really appreciate it, downloaded and using it at the moment as default synth. At first I though it would be difficult to get my head around on how to get this to work, but a breeze so far.
Windows 10 (64bit) M-Audio Fast Track Pro, Band in a Box 2024, Cubase 13, Cakewalk and far too many VST plugins that I probably don't need or will ever use
I am really pleased that some of you have found this of interest. It may not be the best voice set in the world, as it is only about 12mg for 300 odd voices but at least they conform to the Yamaha voices bank changes for XG lite. So useful to Yamaha keyboard owners, when away from their KB, And to use XG midi files in BIAB. Thanks for giving it a go and your comments are much appreciated by me.
Just installed your XG sounds yesterday. It's great to hear those XG sounds once again. Many years ago I had a little external Yamaha synth, something like an XG10 perhaps. Anyway loved those sounds then and it is great to be able to use them again. Don't know how they/you manage to pack them into such a small package. Thanks.
I see from the number of downloads of this file some are finding it useful. Not often a day goes by without someone having a go.
So by way of a reminder here is the link to the dedicated PAT file and Sona inst def. No where near as many down loads for this so I am guessing you may have missed it as it is in a separate thread. Link below to pg thread.
BTW, I have missed some of the voices that are in this Vst. Yamaha has some amazing Bass/E Piano sounds in this, so thanks again for sharing it with us. It sounds incredible and is MUCH better then the Coyote sounds, much better!
Thanks for the downloads. I haven't tried them yet as I have to figure out how to get them installed correctly and then pointed to correctly from Biab.
Prior to having Biab I used a Yamaha PSR910 for creating my backing tracks and was very happy with the styles and sounds of Yamaha. That your download can be added to Biab as a default to upgrade from Coyote is kind of exciting.
Like an earlier poster, I have an external module Roland Sound Canvas MKII but find the rendering to be slow and a bit awkward so I don't use it much.
I had a Roland Integra 7 briefly and completely bombed out with it... I was looking to use it for the guitar expansion pack, 6,000 + sounds and I found I would normally use about 30 different sounds in most cases.
Biab including sforzando has reignited my interest in midi and I truly appreciate your contribution to offer an alternative default with higher quality midi sounds.
Now I just hope to be like musiclover and get my head around on how to get it to work on my system.
the DGX203/206 pat will offer more voices than you have in this set as it will contain the pannel voices as sent from the DGX keyboard as well as the xg lite set.
hi mike this is great sounding the Yamaha higher banks, once I set it up right it sounds great thank you so much eric

Mike I’ll give this a go later this evening. Maybe what would help is a detailed instruction sheet of how to set this up

Nothing complicated just download the Zip file and unzip to a folder find the Dll file in the folder and copy to where you normally keep your Vsti You can move the whole extracted folder to there if you like as long as you know where you have put it. In BIAB you will have to add it to your vsts in the normal way by using add, and navigating to it you will only have to do this once. After that BIAB will offer it to you as a installed vsti
If you do no more, this will give you a XG GM set of voices. If you want access to the higher extended banks of voices in the XG light set, you will need to download and install my Pat file in BIAB. Then you can call up the fancy voices like piano and strings that is msb 0 Lsb 40 voice 1 , by using the choose patch (voice) from pat file in the mixer. Don’t worry you will be shown the voices by name the pat file will look after the msb lsb bit.
hi mike don't give up this is a great plugin so easy to use and perfect with the gm when you fiddle around for a long time to set midi plug in often disappointed and lose the creative edge I don't have to leave biab it sounds very good however I got so many plugins from many dawns I exsport out will try next time stay in biab though thanks for your contributions always eric

Good job! Nice to see the continued interest in midi. Personally, I prefer the Yamaha Synths over Roland and some others. In 2004, I splurged on a Yamaha Motif synth (first generation), and am still using it frequently. I also subsequently purchased the rack Motif ES (2nd generation) that I use with my midi-synth enabled guitars and as sound engine for midi files I create or from BB. Just to throw out a few other soft synth I've been using for years are the Cakewalk(SONAR) TTS-1 that Peter Gannon has listed in the BBW forum, and Dimension Pro (32bit & 64 bit). Between the two hardware Yamaha synths and Cakewalk soft synths, I have a lot to pick from. Cakewalk is now owned by Bandlab but Dimension Pro is still available from them. One last thing...for all things Yamaha Motif and midi, a great resource is http://www.motifator.com/. They have been around for quite some time.
I know this thread is several years old but I'm going to ask anyway. First of all, thanks for putting the VST together.
Im having trouble accessing the patches above 127 in my DAW (Ableton Live). If I change the bank to 2, there's no sound coming out of the VST. What setting should I use to access the sounds above 127? I tried sub-banks too, nothing does it. I can only access sounds 0-127.
thanks for your always valuable work/information sharing with us.
I have some trouble, that Biab recognizes the vst/plugin at all.
Even when I locate directly the folder the dll files are located, the are not recognized and i have a message, that says it is not a "valid" VST2 plugin or so.
The folder I picked contains the below files.
Any tipps on this?
Cheers Stefan

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
