Figure it's about time to replace my aging i5-650 with a newer computer. Figured I would stay with 16Gb but move up to SATA 3 from my current SATA 2 and move up in RAM speeds to the DDR4 2133Mhz. Plan on moving over my SATA 3 SSD and HD's to the new machine. Seeing that Intel just released their new Gen 7 processors, have been looking at an i7 as a replacement. Don't plan on doing a DIY but prefer to do a prebuilt.

Anyone have any experience with the Gen 6 6700 versus the Gen 7 7700?

Any experience with prebuilts? New Egg has some at good prices but from companies I've never heard of: Cyberpower, Cybertron, ABS and others. My last 2 have been Dell XPS's...maybe stick with those?

I've purchased several refurbished PCs/Laptops from Dell at the Dell Outlet Store.

Dell Outlet Store

They have all the normal warranties that a brand new machine would have and you may find a really good deal.

PCs for sale do not last long. They refresh the list daily.

Thanks Steve, appreciate that tip, never thought about that. I'll start looking there too.

AND if you look around you can ADD or REPLACE what's installed with bigger, faster, (and CHEAPER usually) then having DELL configure it in

Like extra RAM, larger HDD's and SDD's, external USB DVD R/W drives , etc.

You might want to look at AMDs new CPU, The RYZEN 7... it compares favorably to the newest i7s with hyper-threaded multi cores.

The Ryzen 7 has 8 cores, each of which can handle 2 threads... so that's 16 processing threads at a time!

It also costs less than half what intels 8 core 16 thread i7-6900 costs.
($499 vs about $1,100)

The reviews I've been reading says its great for content creation (music, video, 3D modelling etc) because those pursuits tend to be CPU intensive.

Good points but my reading leaves me confused. I'm getting conflicting info on multi core usage. Some saying that multi core utilization above 4 cores will see diminishing returns as most DAW audio tracks are handled on a single core basis. Further, they go on to say that, in general, as the number of cores increase, the overall clock speed of the CPU slows. They go on to say that because of this, single core speed trumps multi core performance on PassMark and GeekBench CPU tests. However, the sources also say that multi core use is very dependent on the hosts application's implementation of multi-core use. I find this confusing and somewhat non-intuitive. Although somewhat dated, I believe the work is well grounded compared to today's offerings, take a look here:

Is BIAB and RB written to take advantage of multi cores?

As I understand it, the application has to explicitly split out threads to multiple cores, and of course when you do that, you have to be able to reassemble your results properly after the processing is done.

While some compilers may do this somewhat automatically, my previous reading indicated that you didn't just set a flag to use multiple cores.

That means then that you have to be able to query the cores available and then split out your processing based on that number (whether single core or two or more).

Or you could just do all your processing with a single core and that keeps it simple.

It's been awhile since I've looked at this (and I'm not a programmer, but have interest in it), so it may be different now.

Sometimes it's more efficient to just drive a bus full of people down a single lane of the road and everyone gets there together; other times, you can split up into smaller vehicles and it doesn't matter if some get there earlier than others, but other times waiting for the one to get there can hold up everyone else. So definitely something that has to be thought out carefully.

Jeff, you are asking some very intelligent questions! If I were you I would consider exactly how am I going to use this computer. If the programs that you are going to use do use multi-core then that answers that question. But if they don't use multi-core then you have a decision to make. Will these programs use multi-core in the future or will I purchase a program that uses mult-core? Hard questions that only you can answer.

Personally I would buy the largest 64 bit, multi-core computer with the most ram and available ram space that I could afford. About 6 years ago I purchased an Intel i7 4-core computer with 16 gigs of ram and it is still running strong. Since I purchased this both Sonar and Kontakt have gone multi-core and both have improved their multi-core efficiency, that is they run a lot faster now buy using all cores more efficiency. BiaB and RB are very fast on this system also.

Although PGMusic products are still 32 bit 64 bit is the wave of the future and most music programs, including VSTs and VSTis, are now 64 bit.

These are just my thoughts and others may or may not agree.

Good luck and I hope this doesn't confuse you too much.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Many thanks to Steve, Larry, Pat, John and Mario. Your comments have been more than helpful in not only stearing me in the right direction but also in educating me on the nuisances of current technology. I have to admit, I'm more of a techie than a musician and find the newer technology fascinating.

For now, I think I've settled on the "k" series intel processors with special interests around the 6th and 7th gen versions (6800K, 6700K, 6850K, 7700K) and a look back at the 5th gen 5930K only because its multi core scores even exceed todays newest processors.

As you can see from my byline below, I'm currently using all 64 bit programs, VSTi's and effects with a multi MIDI base. My work with this system and a few software packages that tweek my i5-650 seem to show that both BIAB and RB use multi cores especially when I disable core parking using registry tweeks or a free software called Park Control ( https://bitsum.com/parkcontrol/ ). This seems to help when I load the system with more than 5-6 RealTracks plus SampleTank and /or Kontakt at a time and forces me to raise buffers.

Again, I do appreciate all that have commented on this journey and have furthered my understanding.

Jeff

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
