I just got a new computer and I want to move my BIAB, Realband and all addons and extras to my new computer. I think my first purchase was the full 2012.5 program. I have upgraded every time it was offered since then. I have purchased 49 paks and addons and training vids, etc.

My problem is I am not all that organized so gathering together all of those hard drives and CDs and downloads and installing all of them in the correct order probably is not possible. But I don't wanna miss out on any RTs and other extras I have purchased during these past 5 years.

Is there any way I can just copy my entire BB and RB directories to the new computer and then run an updater to clean it up? Btw, I always installed to the recommended/default folders.

John,

Congrats on the new computer!

What I do when I change computers is to do exactly what you say. I copy the whole \bb and \Realband folders over to the same folders on my new computer and then run the minimum install to load the new computer with the necessary files for Windows. This works fine and allows me to keep everything I've gathered over the years.

It's probably a good idea to deactivate the software on the old computer before doing this.

How easy it is to copy folders directly will depend on your computers. It might be necessary to first copy from the old computer to a USB drive and then from the USB drive to the new computer. It's worth the time it takes.

Because my music computers are desktops, I simply take the hard drive out of my old computer and temporarily load it into my new computer and copy/paste.

Regards,
Noel

Thank you sooo much Noel! I just spent the last half hour going through my old emails for my BIAB orders. And I was preparing to then move to my closet to see if I could match up hardware to emails. If I can just copy the folders it will be so much easier!

Thanks again! Hope you are having a lovely day on the other side of the planet!

One more question if you don't mind...when you say "run the minimum install". Can I just download the latest patch and run that or do I need to use my last downloaded program?

It should be sufficient to run the installer you got for your first version of 2017, then run one update that is the latest one (since each update is cumulative). Then run the installers for any other programs and bonus paks. Finally, run the latest RealTracks update.

To save one of your activations, deactivate the copy on the old machine. Within 30 days, activate the new machine.

Thanks Matt! Why would I need to ruin installers for other programs and bonus paks if I copied them all over? I guess if I have to do that I may as well try to find all of the original media and install everything in order?

The Installer not only copies BiaB files, it also installs fonts into Windows, and creates the necessary internal data files so that BiaB knows where you have installed the product to (so later updates know where to update to, etc).

The Minimal Install is therefore a critical requirement on a new system.

The installers for things like PGMusic DX effects have to be installed because they do write to the registry. If you don't install them, those effects will not be available to you on your new computer, because Windows won't know about copied files...you have to do the install so Windows registers those files and knows where they were installed to.

Right, the last two answers addressed your last question. If you know that the bonus pak has only songs, styles and RealTracks/RealDrums, then no, you would not need to find and run that installer, but could instead just copy over the files.

If I might suggest smile that you take this opportunity to install it to a USB hard drive? That way it can go with you anywhere you go...as long as there is a PC running windows.

I guess it sounds like I just need to install everything, in order since I have no definitive way of knowing what might or might not require an installer from the past 6 upgrades with addons and paks, etc. Arg!

How would this be any different? I already have it installed on a hard drive. And I could copy or even move that hard drive to the new computer. But everyone is pointing out that there are some things that require a specific install and the USB drive would be no different in that respect than my existing drive.

John,

I changed my computer last year and my approach was exactly as described in my first post. Four years earlier when I changed it, I did exactly the same.

I've been continually updating BIAB for a long time.... PlusPaks (sometimes), all Bonus Paks with each new release (even in the days when there used to a mid-year release), UltraPlusPak (sometimes), EverythingPak (sometimes).... I've never had an issue doing it as described and I've never lost anything that I'm aware of. (According to "what add-ons do I have" under Options, I'm still loaded with everything!)

If you have a look at your PG Music Sales account, in My Products, you'll find the installer file that will allow you to run the minimum install of BIAB/RB. My 2017 installer is called "Band-in-a-box and Realband 2017 full (Windows)" and it's 1255MB.

Should the above installer program not be visible, simply add your 2017's serial number to register it and the files will appear (you may need to exit and re-enter).

Based on my experience, if you copy the same folder structure, and all the files there-in, from your old computer to your new computer and then run the above installer with the "minimum install" (from memory, that's around 20 MB that's put onto the internal hard drive), all should be good.

The above approach does not install programs that were additional to BIAB such as Garritan JABB, Coyote Forte, etc.

If you discover anything missing after using the new computer, it would simply be a matter of finding out when that was released. (After 1.5 years on my computer, I have not found anything missing.) If you find something missing and cannot find the install files, PG Music will have records of everything you've bought and they will be able to help. I've seen them do this many times over the years.

Hope this helps.
Noel

P.S. Because I know the above works, I always keep my full and up-to-date \bb and \Realband directories on a USB drive as a back-up of the program.

Thanks Noel! I am going to try your way first. Then I'll compare to my old computer. At the end, if I have the latest BIAB and RB plus all of my RTs, including the paks as well as the last two styles paks...I'm gonna call that a win and move on!

HUGE THANKS to Noel! I used your suggestion to simply copy everything in bb and Realband folders to the new computer followed by installing the latest version and then the updates and it looks like I am back in business! The only thing missing seems to be several supplementary stand-alone programs such as Metronome and Master Flatpick Guitar Solos. And while I can prolly get these from my old drives/disks I have never really used them anyway so no big loss there for me!

Thanks also to everyone else who offered their help and suggestions! Thanks Matt Finley, VideoTrack, jford, and joden!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
