This song was originally written in February as part of the FAWM songwriting challenge. This song encompassed three sub challenges from FAWM. These were to write a song with just one chord, write a song with cowbell as the main instrument and to write an anti-valentine song. It was originally recorded as just an acoustic demo with cowbell for percussion. I decided to use Band in a Box to do a proper accompaniment for it and I plan to use it on my next album. My idea for this song was originally a song about heart break but somewhere along the way it took a dark turn and entered the realms of paranoia and insanity.

Genre: Country, Alt-Country, Americana
Key: Gm
Tempo: 166

Real Drums:
Nashville Outlaw

Real Tracks:
520 Bass, El, Half Note
524 Guitar, Ac, Strumming
619 Guitar, Res Bckgrnd Cowboy
599 Mandolin, Rh, Bluegrass
410 Guitar, EEl, Rh, Country Cowboy
626 Harmonica, Bckgrnd Travis
1329 Medly Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle (Solo)

Other Instuments:
Cowbell
Real Tracks generated using Band in a Box 2011
cowbell/vocals recorded and mixing done with Cubase Elements 9

Lyrics:
You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.
You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.

I can’t put it back together.
I guess you thought you could do better.

You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.
You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.

Why would you go and do this baby?
Now I feel like I’m going crazy.
Why would you go and do this baby?
Now I feel like I’m going crazy.

You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.
You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.

If I can’t have you then no one can.
I’m gonna bury you out in my land.
If I can’t have you then no one can.
I’m gonna bury you out in my land

Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.
Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.
Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.
Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.
Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.
Dig a little hole in the dirt and throw you in.

You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.
You broke this heart of mine
At least a thousand times.

Good toe-tappin' country style Samuel

The only comment is that I think the vocal sits a little too far back in the mix.

Challenge accepted, mission accomplished

You did a great job with these limitations and conditions imposed

I think the FAWM is an interesting concept, I've never tried it

You kept the interest level of the song up especially into the hook

I wouldn't have made it a 5:00 version, maybe hit it and quit it at 3:00

Anyway, I enjoyed it, you've got skills!

Thank you.

Yes, ive been having an isie with the vocals on here. At first they were to in your face so i dialed it back. I think they are almost where they need to be now but maybe could benefit from a little boost.

I would suggest to anyone who writes songs tat they gove FAWM a try. Even if you don't meet the goal of 14 songs in 28 days it's a hreat way to get yoir creative juices flowing. Also the community and support over there is tremendous. Kind of like the support here in the BIAB forums.

As fo the length of my songs I tend to let them go where they want. I dont like to limit myself to 3 or 4 minutes. Although many of them turn out in that range i think some just need space to breath.

Thanks for your comments.

What a tune Samuel! I wouldn't change a thing about this. The lyrics, the delivery, the arrangement - all on point. Not to mention, it's super catchy as well!

Thanks so much for sharing - you should be proud of this one smile

I adjusted the vocal volume and also took a little low end out of the mix. I updated the link in the original post. Hope that helps.

Hello Samuel (or do you prefer Sam?),

That's quite a challenge - and you nailed it! It's difficult to keep interest in a sing with only one chord. But you variety in vocal stylers and misic adjustments along the way kept it fresh throughout. Very nice work!

Alan

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
