Some forum members turned me onto a new licensing site called Songtradr. Have no idea if anything will ever happen with it, but it sure is great for inspiration! And that is good enough for me. So, while my wife was getting ready to go to book club last night, I checked out the "songs wanted" listing, went to the description of what they were looking for, said "Oh yeah, I got it. Good idea!" Went to Band in a Box, grabbed a style, went to song form dialog, wrote the lyrics and song in 10 minutes, recorded it in an hour including the time it took to export BIAB files to the DAW, did the vox, mixed, and mastered it and had it posted to the opportunity in one a half hours from the time I started reading the description. I even had the chance to clean up the kitchen a little to get husband points before the wife got home. "Hey honey! How was Book Club?" "Great. Watcha been doing?" "Oh, nothing, you know, the usual..." Even if it never gets picked I just thought it was cool so I could force myself to write to spec on the spot and have something that sounded pro as a finished product up in slightly more than an hour from the time I read the description. Without BIAB that would not be feasible. Yes, this program continues to blow my mind on a daily basis. That and the Lurssen mastering plugin. Oh, and WHILE and I was doing this I get an email from Floyd Jane asking me to check out the final version of a song we have been working on soon to be posted. I listen and go..."D........Dang!" (That is not exactly what I said but I must remain polite.) I love this world.

Jim, Thanks!! But come on man, you really can't expect me to be a songwriter and not be scatterbrained can you?? We got to carry one another man, carry one another. Cause we're one. And we're one, but we're not the same. Though it may make it easier for you to forgive, now you've got someone to blame. Still, I haven't come here for forgiveness, or even to raise the dead. I'm still trying to play Jesus to the lepers in my head. Hmmmmmm. I wonder if that is a song?????

Dave, It may not be a song {yet} but it is definitely a better than average place to start. You don't have to be crazy to be a songwriter, but it helps. Just saying.

David, David never fear your friend Jim has got your ... eh, ... back. Okay so it needs a little work but you get the gist of it, right?

Thanks Guitar1! If Bono hasn't already beat me to it, I'm set! And on the crazy part, I am going to be fully transparent and just say crazy is not just an advantage, it's a prerequisite. As James Brown said: "I might not know Karate, but I do know crazy!!"

Writing to spec with a deadline is a real challenge that is sure to stretch the abilities of the best. And.... it's a form of writing that forces you to get better at what you do in order to get it done on time. I have done that a few times back in my TAXI days. This is one of those songs done with BiaB. There was two days to get it done. The song was for an Indy film..... ending scene. The song is essentially a narrative of what the movie was about. In fact the screener asked if I had specifically written this for the listing as the lyrics were way to close to be coincidentally written. Just Another Rainy Day It was "returned" as Taxi calls it because the genre was not what they wanted. But yeah.... it's really fun to write like that.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Hi David. Glad to hear you are jumping in. I have 25 songs licensed but am still waiting for some cash to come. I have had one shortlisted for the “spooky” Theremin one. (I never knew something like that existed). I took a PD song I had recorded (the dark island). Made a midi out of the lead vocal. Put a piano track on it as accompaniment and found a Theremin sound in dimension pro. All in about an hour. Thanks to Biab anyone can do it.

For fun I put up a couple of songs as well. Using my free points to see what would happen. I must admit it was quite a thrill to do this. The songs did not make the cut but was definitely exciting while they were being reviewed.

I joined the site about three weeks ago and have submitted about a dozen songs. Most have been "not accepted" but have a couple going to the Overhead Radio thing. we'll see what happens.
As far as payment, my understanding is they collect the money quarterly and pay out 60 days after the quarter has ended. I looked them up on several Internet sites and found no significant bad mouthing about them. I saw janice and Bud's reference to it somewhere along the way and there I am!
I've written to spec quite a few times, so that doesn't bother me a lot. Sometimes the genres are totally out of my ball park so I simply pass on them. All total, over the years, I've brought in about $6K. of course, that's over an 18 - 20 year period. but it'as made a few car payments and bought me some re3al nice steak dinners!
Never joined TAXI but thought about it. $300.00 sounded kind of steep to me.
Good luck to all who participate.
Alan
