Today we might call him "homeless", but in 1975, we called him a "bum".
We (Deb - the girl who would become my wife - and I) happened upon him one day as we walked in the South Florida area where we lived and worked. (I was playing a regular bar gig, Deb waited tables (Ft. Lauderdale). We rented a one room garage apartment (not far from "homeless" ourselves)).

For a couples of hours we listened to the stories he spun - all the while "bumming" cigarettes from us. The price of admission.
We gave him the remainder of the pack when we went on our way...

THE BUM

i met a bum on the beach in boca
he said the islands is where i belong
if i was thirty years younger, i'd swim there
followin' the smell of the rum

he used his coat for a pillow
the state of the world for a crutch
he'd tell you a story for spare cigarette
two if you were a soft touch

his hands were swollen and bleeding
his stories as raw as they come
his whole life a matter of waiting to hear
he traveled the world on a thumb

i've sold more lies than the devil himself
bought love for more than it's worth
sailed every body of water there is
known every woman on the face of this earth

i could have been rich if i wanted
i could have been in heaven tonight
but a poor man sees a whole lot more
and i stuck around for the fight

success is just one way to grow old
mister's a name i'm not called
yeah, i could have been rich if i wanted
but getting back here is too long a fall

alaska, jamiaca, new zealand
i speak at least seven tongues
been drunk in london, in jail in hong kong
and twice almost got myself hung

well, i might die tomorrow
if i were you i wouldn't take bets
look me up next time you're around
hey, can you spare one more cigarette

Man, so good! My new favorite from you I think.

Classic changes and perfect key for your vocal I think, just sounds so smooth and natural. Love the instrumentation and production, the way you bring in the pedal steel at the beginning for example. I dig the fade out ending too, really works well. Mix is as good as it gets, totally pro.

Loved the backstory too!

Your music never fails to move me in some way, I'm a fan!

Hi Floyd.

The number of instruments in your track list belies the wonderful open feel of the arrangement.
I expected something more intense and involved, but was enthralled as the track evolved.

Terrific story. I think that the hardest thing to achieve in life is just being happy
and as I look around I don't see that the people with money and possessions are always the
best at that.

Loved the whole thing. As professional as always and a super mix. Particularly liked the
stereo on this one - big without sounding artificial.

One of your best. (Though I still like your heavier side!)

Cheers, ROG.

Wow - I thoroughly enjoyed this, Floyd. I love how vivid your storytelling is here. There's some seriously great lyrics here. I almost feel like the lack of a chorus made it hit even harder. It's a fantastically written song.

You should be very proud of this one - thanks so much for sharing smile

"the state of the world for a crutch"

that's a line that I wish I'd written

the entire song is a super write and shows great storytelling ability

I instantly fell in love with that acoustic bluegrass Doc soloist

easy flowing, takes you along gently painting images

makes you want to hear it again as soon as it ends

"I could've been rich if I wanted"

even if he could not have, his experiences made him

wonderful mix

as always, I enjoyed this very much

Kenny

I think that this song is probably my new favourite from you. Victoria has a pretty high homeless population (perhaps because it is so temperate year round; some also choose it as a lifestyle), so this song hits pretty close to home and almost moved me to tears. There is so much that we will never understand that they go through on a daily basis, and I feel like this song gives us a small glimpse in to what it's like.

Thanks for making and sharing this song with us! <3

All the lines are great, but these are genius:

his hands were swollen and bleeding
his stories as raw as they come
his whole life a matter of waiting to hear
he traveled the world on a thumb

Nice!!!!

Great song, Floyd. Kinda reminds me of Mr. Bojangles.

I have a story kind of like this. The result of it was REM's third album. Maybe I will tell it later.

smile

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Floyd Jane, well done on this! I found the vocals quite captivating and an excellent groove with this. The Mandolin is a great touch too!

Hi Floyd.
Great this one.
Nice and relaxed.
A mixture of Tom T Hall and Jimmy Buffet to my ears.
Can relate to more of the song than I like to admit.

Hi Floyd,

What a great song! The simplicity of the backing tracks was great idea so as not to detract from fabulous lyric. By far the story telling in the lyric shines above all else.

Also, the way the backing tracks gentle layered up in about halfway through just added to the anticipation of the remainder of the song - compels the listener to pleasantly wait for the ending.

I could have heard Tom T. singing this back in '75 or '76. I'm quite comfortable with analogizing this to a Tom T. Hall effort. He's one of the very best story songwriters in country music history and this is right up there. It can be difficult to hold the listeners' attention without a chorus and a somewhat repetitive verse. But you threw all that out the window and stamped this with an indelible "can't wait to hear it again" mark.

I could ramble on more with seemingly unending praise, but I think you get the point that I believe this is a fabulous song on all accounts and I simply love it.

Best to you and yours.

Alan

Very cool lyric Floyd. Vocal and backtrack was such a smooth blend. Just fit so tight with each other. So enjoyable. Guitar was very cool as well. Well done

Floyd,
I could quote all the praise of listeners so far- Peter sums up my thoughts well.
This is the best song I`ve heard about "bums" ( we called them tramps in the UK) since Ralph McTell`s Streets of London.
Going back for another liten to all that streetwise wisdom!

Hello, floyd

There is a deep taste of the folk song in this tune.
I like your rock vocals very much, but this song is also very nice.
How to use RealTracks is really wonderful.
Particularly Mandolin, Soloist CountryAndy Ev 165.
And as always, your vocals are noteworthy.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

I like it very much Floyd.
As someone said, the lack of chorus may seem odd at first, but it does add power to the storytelling element.

Did we just hear a lost Prine write?

Never noticed the lack of a chorus as the arrangement is perfect for the story and supporting imagery.

The build and variety of instruments is extremely effective and indicative of a heckuva mix.

The vocal was perfect and full of, as Janice said, “richness.”

Many singer songwriters would be delighted to have one or two tunes like this in their repertoire but, man, you are a cornucopia!

J&B

PS We used to talk to an elderly lady, Pearl, who much reminds us of your story.

A BIG WOOOOOOOOOW!!!! This is just great storytelling! I was first struck by the line David referenced. BUT, the whole song is so beautifully put together. Brilliant writing! The repetition of the verse structure as the story unfolds just tangles the listener into the story. Reminds me of something by Jerry Jeff or Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone. The arrangement is PERFECT! And the vocal is exactly the right tone for the story. In the LP days, this would be a first or last song on one side of the Best of Floyd Jane. Awesome Floyd!!! Take care. Greg

I appreciate that, Ember. Glad you liked the song. Indeed, there are far more (obvious) homeless these days. Far too many.

Great story over a top notch arrangement. The entire musical bed is outstanding. It really holds my interest. Enjoyed this a lot and for some reason the bass had my attention throughout the song. It really fit the vibe of the song. A good story of life, and a bit in the vein of "Wrong Mailbox"

Good song by every measure.

The song itself reminded me of Homeless Brother (at least I seem to remember that was the name of the song) by Don Mclean.
Top quality as usual!

Ok, I need to know...how many top line writers are on staff over at the group known as "Floyd Jane?"

I used to think you were but one person, however, as you (plural) have demonstrated, that is clearly NOT the case! It simply wouldn't be possible.

Sorry to point out the obvious.

Genius writing again from you Floyd.

This is magical, both in its sensational instrumentation, but even more so because of the sensational lyrics.

This is story telling - put to music - at its absolute best.

A real winner. Polished delivery. Class? No question at all.

Another great tune. I just love your songs. The story behind this one is really cool and the way you tell the story is great.

Floyd,
I could quote all the praise of listeners so far- Peter sums up my thoughts well.
This is the best song I`ve heard about "bums" ( we called them tramps in the UK) since Ralph McTell`s Streets of London.
Going back for another liten to all that streetwise wisdom!

Robert

Thanks, Robert. Wasn't familiar with Ralph McTell, so went and had a listen... the internet is such an amazing thing...

How to use RealTracks is really wonderful.
Particularly Mandolin, Soloist CountryAndy Ev 165.
And as always, your vocals are noteworthy.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Great job. Wow.

Thanks, Jon. Appreciate that. Just listened to your latest - a Wow right back at ya....

J&B

PS We used to talk to an elderly lady, Pearl, who much reminds us of your story.

smile - I never thought of this as one of my "Prine inspired songs" (I've had many)... more a Jerry Jeff Walker thing, I think... Thanks for the nice review...

Don't think I didn't notice that you "missed" answering my questions. wink

I'm on to you. I'm like the FBI meets Band In A Box. I'm the FBIAB?

You know how I feel about the song. LOVE IT!

Floyd Jingles

by David Snyder

V1

I knew a man his name was Floyd
he played the blues
in worn out shoes
cranky guy, hit writing man
from Florida
he paid his dues

and when he wrote a song
when he wrote a song
it just made me cry

CH

Oh those Floyd Jingles
Oh those Floyd Jingles
Oh those Floyd Jingles...

cry....

Thanks, Rob. I think I may have had that LP - though it was one of those that I played a few times then forgot... went and listened to the song on Youtube - seems familiar, so I must have known it at some point...

Sorry to point out the obvious.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
