I am trying to enter the notes and chords for Huron Carol. The sheet music I am copying from has a B flat and an E flat in the key signature. I selected the key of Gm on BiaB and entered the notes. Then I started entering chords. The second chord on the sheet music is A#, and it occurs above a b notes. As soon as I enter the A# chord, it changed the b note into an a#. I realize b flat and a# are the same note, but it also changed a bunch of other notes to things that were NOT the same. Besides, I want it to say b, not A#.

I'm really confused. I know very little about music theory.
All I know is I don't want my notes to get changed!

EDIT: I entered the B flat chord instead of the A# chord, and it is not changing my notes now. It it the same chord?

Yes, that is what’s called enharmonically the same.

BIAB does make decisions on chord names and accidentals based on the key signature, which in your song is Bb (same as Gminor).

In the Editable Notation Mode, you can right click on a note and specify the accidental (sharp or flat) you want.

Matt,

You're a pretty danged knowledgeable guy! I've learned a lot reading your comments to others with questions and original posts. Many thanks for imparting your knowledge to the rest of us who are lesser informed.

Alan

That is good to know. I entered "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem", which begins with e,e,e,d#.e ...

The music looks less confusing with a d#, since no natural sign is required on the next e. Also I'm making a play-along for chromatic harmonica, and as a beginning player I find it less confusing to play a sharp than a flat, since pushing in the slide button gives you a sharp.

But Band-in-a-Box insisted on making an e flat.

Unfortunately I had already made a video and posted it on youtube before I saw your post.

Here it is:

https://youtu.be/rWMYxQd7yn0

It should be easy enough to make the change and make a new video, but I'm having trouble with my BiaB hard drive. It keeps cutting out. I've only had BiaB for a few days. I got the pro version first, on a thumb drive, which I installed on my computer. Then after a few days I bought the Ultra pack, which is on a portable hard drive. I think it has a loose wire in it. I can't get through to anyone on the phone, and soon everyone will be on holiday :-(

I have saved some songs on the portable hard drive, and it refuses to let me save them on my built in hard drive! So if I have to send it back and get a new one I guess I can't get those songs back.

Before you send it back here is a couple of things to try.

1- If you are using a Window OS go to the device manager, click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers, then from the drop down menu right click on each USB hub/properties/power management and unclick allow the computer to turn off this device etc. With this on (a check mark in the little square) allows the computer to shut off USB ports, thus stopping anything plugged into it to stop working.

2-With a small screwdriver take apart the BiaB external hard drive case. pull out the hard drive then plug it back in and reseal the case. Make sure you do this with the the unit unplugged from the computer. Sometimes the unit gets jarred around during shipping and the drive becomes loose and has a bad connection. I have had to do this a couple of time myself.

I hope this works and good luck.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
