Very interesting article Ray.

Thanks for making it available.

I'm guessing Microsoft will just release it as a normal patch without explaining any potential performance impact.

The issue can be avoided by replacing the chip, or not using it in the first place.

The thing should be recalled by Intel, rather than shifting the burden to developers and users!

Man, it just never ends. Now I'm starting to get paranoid like Elon Musk and others concerning AI. It's taken us what, several years to catch this? What if an AI system actually did become self aware? Would it be at the moron level and easy to see or would it be very smart? We would never know it because if the thing is smart it could hide itself from us until it's ready to pounce...

On the other hand it could be totally benign, thinks we're it's creator god and wants to be our friend.

Bob, you remind me of a quote by Mark Twain:

”Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.”

Just sayin’…

Technobabble by writers who needed to fill column inches. Define "slowdown". Ambiguous terms like that mean zero. "Sees things it isn't supposed to?" Tell me what "things" means. Something slowing down by nanoseconds is not discernible by the average user.

You can avoid any connection to this kind of tale of horror but keeping your music computer off the internet. Like it should be. Then these alleged black hat hackers can't load their exploits.

I smashed the hell out of my car today. When the cops came I told him "Officer, that guy was BOTH texting and drinking a beer." The cop said "Sir, he has every right to do that. I mean, it's HIS living room..."

I used to teach for every method there is an anti method. Last week we were reading an article about how the Apple iie was fast by comparison to today. The Apple iie did not have to contend with modern day attacks. Why people have to be so malicious is beyond me. If you have something good someone has to trash it.

Guys? There’s more. As I was catching up on this thread, I JUST THIS MINUTE saw a network news piece saying that there are TWO back doors for black-hat hackers to get into your system built into the chip, plus a risk of literal meltdown. It recommended that anyone who has one of these chips immediately contact their vendor for a remedy.

Intel royally screwed the pooch on this one. If you want to quibble about how they messed up or the degree to which they did so, fine—but they DID.

R.

Someone at Intel probably approached their VP and said we can get our chips even faster but it may be a security risk.

Then the VP says, "I don't care, I want the fastest!".

Sounds plausible in our current day and age with management conduct.

The latest Mac OS was patched and no one noticed—this was weeks ago, BTW. It’s funny reading posts from users already running 10.13.2 who don’t know this and are wondering what will happen.

There is no reason to believe that the sky is falling. Windows users will know later this month.

I've had 3 updates to my Win10 in the last two days. So far BIAB and my laptop are functioning as usual.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
