I actually got this idea while writing to a different thread, at http://www.pgmusic.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=208088, and mentioned it there, in my second post to the thread (post #208094). The suggestion seemed to get lost in the discussion there, so I think the idea merits its own thread.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, as it is not exactly a suggestion for an improvement in BIAB, but a suggestion for a new product--a BIAB plugin.

That other thread was about ways of working with BIAB together with a sequencer program, especially with these new aspects of RealDrums and RealTracks.

Of course, one good solution to that problem is to use RealBand as one's sequencer, which already has a lot of BIAB functionality built into it.

However, as I mentioned there, many people will prefer to continue to use the sequencer-DAW applications that they are already used to. The only way for these applications to interface with BIAB is to save files in BIAB, that one can import into the sequencer. (Formerly one saved MIDI files in BIAB for importation into the sequencer, but now, with RD and RT, it could well make sense to save those tracks to .wav as well.)

I am not a programmer, so I don't know if the following suggestion is practical, but I will throw it out there. Why not develop a VSTI-DXI-RTAS BIAB plugin, which could add some of the functionality of BIAB, including RealDrums and RealTracks, to any program that can use those plugins?

The plugin version could be bundled with the regular BIAB program, or sold separately (with discounts, of course, for BIAB users).

What are user's opinions of such a possibility? Any comments from PG, whether you think it is feasible, and a good idea?

(If you do end up creating and selling that new product, do I get a commission for suggesting it? )

It's hard to visualize a plug in that requires 30 gigabytes of hard-disk space, in my of course limited view. But maybe, you have it already contemplated?

I don't have anything contemplated--just suggesting a general idea.

Regarding how much disk space it takes up, would depend on, as when one installs the regular BIAB, how many of the RT and RD packages they wish to install.

And no, that is not uncommon. How many gigabytes do you think orchestral sample libraries take up? They also come in plugins--of the three types mentioned, and require installation of the huge sample libraries.

Of course there would have to be a major difference in pricing, depending on what the person already has. If a person already has the BIAB ultra-pak, with all the RD and RT paks, and just is adding the plugin itself, I would expect the price for just the plugin should be fairly inexpensive, or be included itself in the Ultra-pak.

Whereas, if someone is starting from scratch with the plugin, they would be buying much more than the plugin itself, but also RD and RT packages, etc., depending on what they want.

Sure, but it would be nice to also have VSTI and DXI as well, no? (DXI seems to be getting less common though, with some plugins just coming in VSTI and RTAS formats. DXI could be skipped, but it would be nice to have VSTI as well as RTAS.)

(I guess when these plugins started, it was important to have DXI, as some programs, notably Sonar, BIAB, and RT only included DXI support, not VSTI. Later Sonar added a VSTI "wrapper", to enable use of VSTIs as DXIs. Later they added native VSTI support, later added also by BIAB-RT. I cannot think of any current app that supports DXI, and not VSTI, although there are many the opposite way. Also, I think DXI is just Windows (I could be wrong though), and VSTI is cross-platform. So perhaps the need for the DXI plugin format is over, although I don't know if some apps possibly work better with DXI than VSTI?)

They sound like good ideas from 10 years ago.

It's way better just drag the track in the DAW mode and then take the files and import them into your DAW. People forget that not every DAW supports VST or VSTi. Pro Tool only uses AAX as of Pro Tools 12

A "Plug-in" is a broad term for Biab VST/VSTi/AU/AAX 64/32.
How will you sync Biab tracks you want to add to that Live session that you recorded the other night to the same tempo map with just dragging from Biab ????

Love this idea.

But better still would be for PG to sell to Yamaha and with Yamaha funding - and Steinberg helping with the coding - get the core BIAB engine incorporated into Cubase itself.

Plus Yamaha could add the MOTIF/HALION engines into BIAB - for ultimate MIDI sounds - and there could even me some synergy combining BIAB styles with Yamaha PA arranger styles!

But yes - i'd love to have a BIAB plugin in Ableton - my DAW of choice.

Would need Ableton to introduce a chord-track like Cubase has now to make full use of it.

Maybe whats needed is a back-end BIAB "Server" and have the plugin as a client so that commonly used styles can be buffered in RAM for fast access.... dunno.

Yeah, but Liquid Music for Max Live is more versatile than the chord track in Cubase. WaveDNA just updated LM for AL10. If anything in this case you should be adding Max for Live to the list of plugin support.

You should be able to drop the track directly into your DAW. You may have to use the drop station first, but it does the trick.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
