I'm using a USB microphone, and I've successfully recorded a few bars of vocal audio. Now I can't get BAIB 2011 to re-record or punch record or erase a region of audio or even erase the whole thing. Each time I try to re-record I press play to regenerate the song, but I'm still hearing the original audio. Frustrated! What am I doing wrong?

Hi bredengerd and welcome to the forum. You'll have much more flexibility if you will import or drag and drop your BIAB file into Realband and then record your vocal there. In Realband you can record as many vocal tracks as you want on separate tracks and do punch ins if you'd like. You can also record several vocal tracks ant then edit them into one if you wish. When you record a vocal into BIAB it makes one wave file and it's replaying that file until you erase it. Try going into the song file and deleting the associated wave file of your vocal.

Realband is much easier and better for tracking vocals.
Hope that helps.

Depending on the o/s you are using this may be a permissions thing.

If you folder is called songs and the file you are using is called test then the file test.wav should be in the folder. You can manually delete it.

That won't solve the permissions thing, you may need to go down the 'tree' from the start and change permissions, OR turn off UAC in your o/s. That's a windows function so you can google the name of your o/s (ie Vista) and the UAC Off and see how to do it if you don't know. It's possible it's just your system trying to save you from yourself.

BB can do punch recording, it simply writes over the measures that you want to do a re-take. You enable punch recording from the recording dialog box telling it which bars to write over. Hope this can help.

Also be sure that the Overdub Underlying Audio box is not checked in the Record Audio Dialog window. The Audio Dialog Window opens when you select the Record Audio Button.

Recording Audio also defaults to a Stereo Track and so it is also better to change that setting to a Mono track if you haven't already done so when you are recording a microphone input.

Doing a punch in edit, you will hear the original audio during the recording except for the actual bars that are being overwritten. The punch in only records the bars you have highlighted to be overwritten and the remainder of the audio on the track remains intact.

If the Overdub Underlying Audio Box in the Record Audio Dialog window is checked, the punch in recording merges the newly recorded audio with the original track and does not erase the original audio. This is useful to add a additional part such as a guitar riff or harmony or double vocal effect.

Sundance is correct that you will likely find recording vocals in the RealBand program easier, more versatile and thus, more fun.

I also suggest you create a short test file so you can determine if things are working correctly or if there is a problem with settings or if there is a problem with the file itself. I always create test files after a complete restart of the computer and BIAB. If your original program is ignoring all changes, won't re-record, won't erase, won't punch in, etc, the problem could be settings or an issue within that file itself.

Thanks for the good advice, I do prefer to switch my vocal to mono as you stated. I like the fact that they provide over dubbing as well within BB that is a very nice touch! I do also use Real Band as well as another DAW for my work. However our music dept likes the BB project so they can work with it from there.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
