Hi,

In the piano roll editor is there a function to 'glue' all notes of the same value together.

I've got a Strings patch in the editor where I need long sustaining notes rather than quarter notes etc.

I usually edit midi in Samplitude but it would be quicker done in BIAB.

Regards
Brian

If you don't have a midi keyboard to record with, you can turn on the Keyboard Wizard (PC Keyboard) to record with. You can record single, sustained notes and THEN add a 3 part/4part etc HARMONY with the Biab Harmony function.

That will give you a fuller sounding "String" section.

Once you have recorded and added harmony and like what you've got, you simply "convert" the harmony parts into whichever harmony you have selected for the melody or soloist track.

The keyboard wizard will auto-magically play notes within the chord changes of your song in Biab by simply using the alphabet of your pc's keyboard. I usually use the BHNJMK<L keys for moving up and down the scale.

Using an ASIO driver while recording will eliminate any "lag" in the recording process.

Thanks for that Muzic Trax.

What I should explain is that I've generated a style with strings which I want to use.

Going into the piano roll editor some notes of the same pitch generated are 1/4 1/8 notes over a length of 8 bars.
What I'm needing to do is 'glue' those notes together so they become one of the same pitch.

Maybe it's beyond the editing capabilities of the piano roll editor.

Regards
Brian

Take all but the first and delete them, then drag the first to be longer.

It sounds like you will need to "copy and paste" the string track to the melody. Then edit the note lengths and assign the strings patch to it. Otherwise, whenever you hit the play/generate button the strings part will ALWAYS re-generate it's parts. You can get around this by copying them to either the melody/soloist track, where these tracks will NOT re-generate when pressing the play.generate button.

Hopes this made sense?

Trax

You can do this with Edit (top of Biab) / copy/move tracks.

Try looking up "tie notes" in the Biab help menu. I believe you are wanting to tie some notes together? Biab will automatically tie note together depending on how close the notes are on the timeline when entered manually in the notation editor.

I can not read music, but I have manually entered notes (In Notation Editor)from sheet music into Biab and have seen two notes with a swoosh type mark tying them together. Biab tied them together just like the sheet music was written.

Notation is different then Piano Roll, FYI.

Brian:

Perhaps I'm not understanding your question correctly, but can you try this in the Piano Roll window?

- Let's say that the notes you want to "glue together" are all "C5"
- In the Piano Roll window, make sure you have the required track selected
(i.e. in your case, the "Strings" track)
- Left click on the C5 piano key at the far left of the Piano Roll window
- That selects ALL the C5 notes that will be played on the Strings track
(they will all turn red)
- Hold down the Shift key and move your cursor to end of (that is the right-hand
side of) the first of your C5 notes.
- The cursor will change to a right-pointing arrow
- Left click anywhere near the end of that C5 note, and drag it to the right
- That will lengthen not only the note you clicked on, but ALL the C5 notes on
your Strings track.

Is that what you are trying to do?
Good luck!

Hi Brian,

Are there gaps between the notes? If there aren't, you may not need to do anything, due to this feature we added in 2014:

Legato Strings feature

For MIDI generated tracks (or MIDI SuperTracks), if the patch is a strings patch, instead of retriggering the same note, it will play a longer single note. This results in a smoother strings part, since only notes that are changing between chords will get triggered again. For example, if the strings are playing F and Bb for a Gm7 chord, and then a C7 chord comes and they play E and Bb. Now Band-in-a-Box will sustain the common Bb note since it doesn’t change, and only change the F to an E (assuming that the notes are intended to be played as sustained notes with no gap between them)

So as long as there are no gaps between notes, BIAB should be playing them as one sustained note automatically. Does it sound like this isn't happening?

Thanks
Kent

Hi,

Thanks Lloyd and Kent for your replies.
The Piano Roll Editor works as expected Lloyd, and the Legato feature works fine Kent.

The editing I'm trying to do is:

Generate a lovely melody in the Melodist with a strings patch.
(Some of the melody has eighth notes over two bars of the same pitch following each other)
Maybe add an octave harmony.
Copy the melody track to the strings track.
Enter Piano Roll Editor.
Here I would like to 'glue' the eighth notes together to create one note over two bars.

In Samplitude the midi editor has a 'glue' note function, maybe this could be BIAB wish list.

Regards
Brian

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
