May I offer one suggestion? I think that using "lesson" to end that line in the 2nd verse is a bit awkward..I don't have an alternate suggestion, but that's the only improvement I could offer.

Loved your use of BIAB RT's and the style...thanks for showing us "how it's done"!

TM - thanks for the nice review. I agree the the word "Lesson" comes out a bit bumpy as it is sung. That is my fault for not paying attention... it was intended to be sung more as one syllable - "less'n" - which works a lot better - and it is the idea that I wanted at that point (and I could not find a better alternative). Thanks for the listen and the comments...

Floyd, I'm late to the party but glad that I came.

I agree with everything that has been said.

Excellent song.

What a setup for everything that follows. Very few folks can breathe life in a hittin' the road song. You've done it in spades!

We much like the sparse production and that mandolin track is one of the best acoustic RT's in BiaB's catalog. He's playing a wonderful instrument with a great touch. Few mandolin players get that sound.

Gruve mentioned how soulful your vocal is and, as you oft heard, that is our entry for ANY genre vocal. You delivered big time and, as always, the word classy comes to mind.

It's easy to say we can hear so and so singing this on the radio...to heck with that we can't imagine anybody other than mr jane performing it!

Outstanding...

Really liked the idea of keeping it all down. Mandolin solo was great.

In my ears the song is strong enough to go without the guitar solo (even if it's Brent), just humming the melody line would be enough. No guitar fills needed – the mandolin fills at the end is just great – wow!

Thanks for sharing!

Einar - so glad to have you drop in for a listen! Thanks for the nice comments.

Hi floyd,

What an excellent song (again)!

Everything about this gleams…. your composing, your singing, the arrangement, the production…. everything! It’s a great hook, too. Before I listened to the song, I sat here for a couple of minutes reflecting on the title. It’s amazing how those three words, “White Line Lullaby”, open a treasure chest of lyric possibilities.

Some of the thoughts that occurred to me as I reflected were: highway, cars, trucks, long-distance driver, cocaine, lulled to sleep, jet stream, sports field, athletics track, crest of an ocean wave, surfing, wake of a boat, etc…

Then I started reading your lyrics and discovered that the ‘white line lullaby’ is about a restless soul who is unable to settle down and relationships. This twist was not something that occurred to me! Nice!

Those first four lines in verse 1, are powerful!

Quote:
the soul of a bandit, a rodeo heart
the highway in my shoes
one eye on the front door
a suitcase full of blues

These are amongst the best ‘showing’ lines that I have ever read.

Rather than just saying “he’s a constantly restless man who lives by his own set of rules”, you’ve painted a truly inspired picture of this guy. By the end of line four, this man was firmly planted in my mind as a 3-D, fully believable character. At that point, I couldn’t have stepped out of the song if I wanted to. As I see it, that’s very strong writing indeed. Being able to ‘show’ character traits as clearly as you have in this song is a skill that I’m still practising. Maybe one day…

In the meantime, it’s great to have you here in the forum to show me how it’s done!

I totally enjoyed listening to this (a few times).

All the best,
Noel

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
