We released an album at the end of June to all the major streaming platforms via Songtradr’s distribution deal. Yesterday we got our first payment - $32 for July. Nearly all from iTunes sales, Spotify streaming and Apple Music streaming. A pittance? Yup, but two months should pay the annual $60 fee for Songtradr’s Pro Plan which includes unlimited single, EP and album distribution to all the big players. I guess we could increase it with some promotion...nah. smile

No mountain home on the way but it is fun to diddle around with.

Howdy, great to hear from you.

“All Over The Map” by Janice Merritt. Searching Spotify ,Apple Music, Amazon, etc., with her name in quotes will find it and an EP called “Quiet Desperation.” I think most of the “haul” came from iTunes downloads. I haven’t read the details yet.

Sure, but please don’t give them our address. Our house is in the woods and it would be a hassle to have folks driving in to look at the palatial estate.

I think that's great.
"A pittance"?....to some maybe, but not me because I put little importance on that dollar value.

IMO....what's more important is that it's a manifestation of public recognition/acceptance.
Plus, it helps keep one's song writing enthusiasm alive and well.

Obviously your promotional path and song writing skills has proven itself to an actual listening demographic.
Who knows what can occur from here on? smile

That's my take.....

Hey, by the way, I want to launch a Kickstarter campaign.

Can I count on you and Janice for $32?

Thank you and you’re right. It does offer some validation to one’s efforts when folks other than family and friends apparently like it. Particularly given that we do only for fun. I was referencing (poorly) the difference in digital distribution and back in the day when we could sell a few CD's on CDBaby and make "real" money. We recorded a CD with our mentor, Randy Howard, that did well -- particularly in Europe where it charted and continued to sell for quite a while. We released it after his passing at only 39 and gave the proceeds to cancer research entities. Too this day (that was 16 years ago) every bit of money we might make from music we donate in his name. So I didn't mean to seem flippant about it.

I frequently mention Randy and anybody interested can read about him on our web page. He was an amazing grammy nominated musician.

$4.99 a month and can be cancelled any time. A lot of the digital distributors charge more than that for one album release. We've gotten a kick out of it. It takes about 20 minutes to create a "release" assuming your songs are already on Songtradr and you have something suitable for "cover" art. It's just a hobby for us...not something that we take seriously enough to ever consider creating music specifically for Songratdr or would take the time to actively promote. We just uploaded our BiaB user forum catalog and use it for releases and possible licensing, etc.

But as I mentioned in an above post knowing strangers are paying for (iTunes) and streaming from Spotify, etc., does make you feel like you might be getting something "right" -- at least for a very limited audience smile And, the songs that we've licensed through Songtradr offers the same sense of validation.

FWIW, etc.

No....you didn't sound 'flippant' at all and no clear thinking person would think that.

I see you've had some past success and are persevering in a very competitive and saturated market landscape.

Write well and prosper....

Very good. Question, since I’m not familiar with Soundtradr: does it include registering you on Sound Exchange? You’ll want to have that if you get picked up by satellite TV music channels, or Sirius XM etc.

Hey Bud,

That's great news! In this day of getting paid $.005 for a stream I think $32 is a pretty good payout for one month.

I was reading some of the replies and have a question for you about Songtradr. They distributed your music to all the major players because you have their pro plan which costs $4.99 a month. You said you can cancel that subscription at any time, but if you do that what happens to future earnings from the CD? Does Songtradr get it??

That's great news. Congratulations.

I recently floated a trial distribution release but it's too soon to see any results.

Matt, I have no idea. I do know that CDBaby has negotiated a deal with them re digital releases but dunno about Songtradr. They do assign the international code numbers to the songs, etc.

Hey Dave, 2/3 of that total came from iTunes downloads so there was not, relatively, a very large number of streams. I have no idea why folks are still paying for iTunes downloads.

If you cancel the Pro option ST get's 40% of the income. However, you can request that your releases be removed and you could go with another distributor. Also ST has a new plan where non Pro users can pay $20 a year and get unlimited releases. So there are a lot of options. Me? I wonder if we'll wake up one day and ST will be gone. They seem to be to be a bit of a shaky startup although I think they have a good business plan. But the website remains very quirky and they don't have a mobile app.

Cool.... if you're like me, it's not about the money. It's the journey. The people we meet, the fun we have, and the occasional check in the mailbox is just the icing on the cake, and a good reason to go out and blow it all on one dinner.

That was my first thought too! You must be generating some serious plays to generate $32 in your first month! Good job!

The nice thing about this paradigm is that the shelf life of music is practically infinite, and your potential audience is global. Unlike manufacturing, where you have to make a new item in order to sell it and make money... with music you make it once then "sell" it many times. Any kind of recurring income, no matter how small, is awesome! Like free money!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
