Today I was doing some mixing and I could not get the drums right. Every now and then there was an extra loud high pitched snare type hit totally different to most of the drumming. I did my usual and soloed the drums, they were fine. When I soloed the bass there were loud clicks. These clicks hit on beat with the kick and sometimes the snare making it appear the snare was at fault. Looking at the wave form showed nothing untoward. The Spectral Editor in Reaper clearly showed the click and made it easy to remove the noise.
For quite some time I have tried using eq to get shy of various unwanted noise without that much success. Today I spent time learning and using the Reaper Spectral Editor. This makes it easy to reduce or remove the fret squeaks that show up in the really nice acoustic picking one gets from BIAB.
Just some thoughts

I hear acoustic guitar squeaks on lots of “pro” productions. I think they are part and parcel of the acoustic sound...like a bit of breath intakes. Extraneous bass and snare noises not so good. FWIW
I agree some squeak or fret noise is more realistic or natural however when it is really loud it can become overbearing. To tame it is what I was getting at. To reduce it to where it lies in the background.

My 72 year old ears have been gone since I was in my 40’s. Profound high f loss and tinnitus. BUT, I have a brilliant Ph.D. audiologist and she’s taken me on as a research project I have a pair of very high end hearing aids and she and I have worked together on the compression settings and f band boosts (some up to 80db) for a program that lets me mix and another for enjoying the sounds of nature and more for general use. I can switch them via my iPone. She changed my life and made my younger wife’s life easier in the process - no more me thinking she’s mumbling, etc., incidentally Janice can hear that hummingbird at a quarter mile!
Looks really cool but not sure I would jump for $399.
That seems pretty pricey, all right!
It's basically a high-quality FFT/IFFT. There's nothing about the technology that's secret, so I'm not sure how that price is justified.
I picked it up a couple of years ago, and have used it to fix problems like squeaks and so forth. It's handy, but on an exposed track, there's going to be a noticable sound difference if there's a hole in the sound spectrum, so you've got to be careful using it.
Definitely something good to have in the arsenal of needed. I think there's a demo version, do you can play with it too make sure it's worth buying.
The thing I learned about tracking down noises is that you have to check all your tracks... Those sounds can hidden really well!

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
