I started the whole computer-music thing with loops, simply tired of me + guitar. I thought I might be able to write chords and backing with loops. Certainly, it's possible for some styles, though these styles generally use few chord-changes (sometimes none at all).
So I quit trying and just started messing with loops. It can be a lot of fun and creative too.
Then I discovered BIAB and the difference between trying to "loop" a song and "composing" with BIAB was more than the difference between day and night--it was the difference between day and orange.
But that was back in the midi-only days. This weekend it hit me: Real Tracks are essentially long loops. They can even be accessed in the folders. So that got my mind working on ways to use these short recordings/long loops in other ways.
In addition (and maybe even more relevant) is the ability to create loops in BIAB itself.
Does anybody think of them that way? Do you use them also as color/bits of "sound" to enhance your tracks? If so, what is your method?

I see your point. I think of RealTracks as snippets of audio (from one to as much as eight measures) “under control” of MIDI.
Did you know BIAB does handle loops (loops here in the conventional and sometimes commercial sense)?

I also started computer music using loops back around 2001 or so, using a program called Acid Music.
When I discovered BIAB a few years later I pretty much totally switched over to that for building my tracks, with the exception of the drum tracks. I would throw away the BIAB (midi) drum track and build a new one using Acid loops. Time consuming but a much better sound compared to midi.
So when BIAB first introduced realdrums (realtracks came later) I always thought of them as loops being arranged by BIAB.
As Matt says, BIAB added some basic support for third party acid loops a few years back. I use them sometimes just as you said, to add some colour to the track, sound effects etc.
I still have masses of CD's full of acid loops, one of these days I'm going to load them up here and experiment with using them via the loop tool BIAB provides.

BIAB is also thousands of hours of sounds to get pristine Samples. BIAB now has Sforzando and Sforzando files can be made with samples. This makes it possible that a RealTrack can be sampled and a Sforzando file created that in some instances, Midi fills, riffs and phrases can be made from samples of the same instrument used in your song.
Whether that technique happens to work or not, BIAB has hundreds of instruments and sounds to build a magnificent sound library. It will be a custom sound library because only BIAB program owners have access to all those 2500 + hours of audio.
Modern producers sample commercial CD's all the time. To do the same with BIAB, create a close cover of a song, isolate the instrument you want to use and grab a pristine sample for your loop.
Contrary to what many believe, BIAB can actually be a modern day producer of Hip Hop, House, Techno, Pop and Country music dream program to create their particular genre of music.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
