Can somebody please answer this one (two actually) or point me to the right direction:

Is it possible to change octave for the chords inputted in BIAB?
If it is... is it possible to notate it in chord input bars with symbols or such?

Maybe my eyes are just tired, can not find the options...

Thank you.

Hi,

BIAB does not have an option that let's a user select which octave they'd like chords played in. This applies to both MIDI and Audio generations.

If one uses MIDI tracks, it's possible to modify the generated data using either the piano roll or notation editor. Once modified, the track can then be frozen and the modifications will be preserved.

With RTs, since they are recordings of studio musicians, the tracks cannot be easily modified.

Regards,
Noel

Wouldn't a DAW able to hold midi tracks usually have a simple transpose function? +12? I used to do it in Acid 4.0.

Tangmo, I was thinking of realtracks, thanks!

Noel, thank you for explanation, but technically, in theory it should be possible because you can transpose realtracks... My understanding is that elastique allows for octave +1/-1...
Or I am thinking this wrong?

Not RealTracks from within BIAB.

You can transpose MIDI in BIAB, and in Preferences, Channels you can change octaves for MIDI.

My understanding is that the elastique algorithms can only realistically transpose by a small amount. Extensive transposition introduces unwanted artifacts in the resultant audio. Perhaps this is the reason that a transpose feature is not suitable for RealTracks.

Still, could be fun to experiment. I am sure that at least some instruments would sound acceptable.
Maybe a wishlist item smile

In my experiments with other software doing pitch shifting, I can't do more than +/- a minor third before artifacts make it not listenable. I believe Melodyne Editor is the only one with a fighting chance using current technology.

And even with Melodyne, you start hearing artifacts. You can do an acceptable 3rd harmony, but more than that, it starts generating artifacts.

Rustyspoon,

For transposition of Realtracks, if you have the Windows version of BIAB, Realband makes it much easier. In Realband, there is a PG Music audio effect called "Pitch Shift". To use this...

1. select the entire track after it has been generated (click on track and then use CTRL+A)

2. right-click on the selected track and choose "Audio Effects" from the pop-up menu

3. select "Pitch Shift"

4. change the number of semitones to +12

5. click on "Process"

Regards,
Noel

P.S. These audio effects are destructive in that they modify the parent audio file. With this in mind, make sure that you save any file you like before applying the effects -- it makes it easier to recover if you want to return to the original. Making a copy of the track before processing also makes it easy to get the original back.

The answer is also somewhat dependent on the tempo and pitch of the source material. A busy RealTracks has a much greater chance for inducing artifacts than a sparse RealTraccks. Ten percent change in tempo at 60 BPM may not induce as much artifacts as a ten percent tempo change at 180 BPM. Likewise there is more opportunity to induce noticeable artifacts in a slow ballad clean guitar with tremelo than an already distorted metal track.

Thanks for your answers!!

Noel, I think you are talking about "pitch shifting" whole track. I think that can easily be done in Cakewalk too... I was hoping pitch can be adjusted on specific chord in BIAB without slicing and dicing smile

I was fooling around trying to make sort of break/transition that had a bunch of stop/holds and wanted some octave variations on chord hits to make it more fun. Not a big deal. As I understand, we are not there yet as far as available software. New hardware arrangers are built on mixture of audio clips + midi. I am sure that goodness will come to PC as well.

Yes, I was talking about the whole track (that's how I interpreted your original post). If you only want to change a chord in RB, all you need to do is select that chord in the audio file.

Realband will process whatever section is selected and leave the unselected sections alone.

You can make a backup copy of the RealTrack instrument folder and then transpose the contents of the original.
You can create a UserTrack from the RealTrack and transpose it though UserTracks are very good at over transposing themselves anyway.

RealTrack don't always get it right :

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
