How in the world did I get here? This was supposed to be a rock song when I started and somehow ended up being one I would classify as Folk/Bluegrass/Pop or something like that. I guess that’s what I get for scrolling through the multitude of styles available in BIAB! Anyway, I feel that this style works for this song. Thanks for the listen!

The Road That Leads Me Home
Copyright 2018
Torrey Bliss

I’ve been on this road so long
I wonder why I’m here
Can you help me find the one that leads me home
I guess it’s true my life’s the sum
Of the choices that I’ve made
Yet the more I learn the less I seem to know

But there’s a fire that still burns deep inside
It’s keeping me and my dream still alive

Oh to get back those old memories
And live them once again
Can you help me find the road that leads me home
Still my heart is asking me
Does home await for me anymore

The day I left there were no goodbyes
Nor a moment to share a smile
Now I find myself out here alone
On the road there’s lots of time to think
And dwell on those mistakes I make
And wonder if I’m needed any more

But there’s a fire that still burns deep inside
It’s keeping me and my dream still alive

Oh to get back those old memories
And live them once again
Can you help me find the road that leads me home
I want to soar on wings of love and let them carry me
Along the narrow winding road that leads me home
Still my heart is asking me
Does home await for me anymore

This sure is different from your other work Torrey, different but great!
The audio quality is super. How did you get so much saturation in the mix without any sign of distortion?

Man, oh man, did this thing ever want to be what it became. Wonderful progression. Tight lyric well sung and harmonized. Great stuff.

Man! This is just so good .....

Great groove first of all. Love the vocals and harmonies! And those background "ahs", perfect.

Cool little breakdown at 1:02, very effective. Nice work on those acoustic leads, and mix sounds good through the phones.

I think this is my new favorite of yours!

This is excellent - a solid sound, with an excellent selections of BIAB elements. Your vocal & guitar make it happen though.
On a purely personal taste bias I'd have rather-ed you sing rather than speak the line "I guess it’s true my life’s the sum" as the delivery on that line seems at odds with the rest and adds a little country corn.
Mate, this could climb any chart that played songs with melody, character and a message.

Torrey,

What a great groove to this - such a cohesive sound! (which means a great mix).

The vocals are excellent (main and harmonies). And a good write - can't imagine this should be anything other than where it ended up.

Put me in mind of "The Flying Burrito Brothers".

Super. Terrific listen.

Superior! (is this really Alison Krause and Union Station?)

you're a great chameleon,

we all had to learn numerous styles playing in cover bands

but you are a master,

seriously, your writing, Singing, and mixing skills are stellar

enjoyed this very much,

Torrey,

Your pop sensibilities push a good bluegrass/country tune into the radio-ready zone.
A great on the road/driving song!
Very good vocals and your harmonies are always so smooth.
Its cool to hear your unplugged guitar solo too.
Up there with your best.

What a tune! Despite that it was meant to be a rock song, I definitely don't think think needs anything changed. The groove is infections and carries it along beautifully. Really catchy vocal lines, and the harmonies are flawless.

Thanks for sharing smile

I'm blown away, Torrey. What an arrangement. It goes to show what a free creative spirit can accomplish, having thrown convention to the wind. Still, there is this idea that you must possess some hidden secret to verse/chorus/bridge/solo, not tomention lyrics. What other explanation can there be?
Great job.

Thanks so much Rob and Anne-Marie! The effect I use in my master chain that I think really helps is a Native Instruments product called a “Transient Master” that allows me to bring up the volume considerably. T

Thanks Peter! Yes this is different from my usual material but I have learned that when inspiration strikes we have to go with it. By the way, some of the musicians I have had the most respect for are in the Bluegrass genre. A lot of those folks toil in anonymity yet are some of the most accomplished players out there and they have my utmost respect! T

Great groove, excellent background vocals, evocative mandolin, excellent guitar. Perfect vocals.

Oh, yeah.... There are probably lyrics, too. But mostly, the sound. That groove and singing just picks me up and carries me along like a train until it's done and it's like waking from a dream.

Really, really good. One of those songs that uses all those RealTracks in a way that made me want to buy them in the first place, and then adds even more excellent playing and singing on top of that. laugh

Torrey,

Seems like every song I’m clicking on tonight is just killer—welcome to the club because this is excellent. Not sure what “rock” sound you had in mind, but this sound fits just perfectly. Glad the road led you there. Great production work—slick. Love the mandolin work here; nice touch. Good luck with this one!

Kindest regards,

Deej

Sometimes I feel so awkward to be outside of your normal comfort groove. But you were right on this one! The style fits the song perfectly! Congratulations for going with the flow of the music and agreeing to being a little uncomfortable. I really liked the half-step movement of the melody is you started the lyric. That really captured my interest. And of course the production is so professional, and the sound is so great. Thanks for sharing your outstanding work!

You are probably aware that the two of us played in a bluegrass band for many years. We still continue to listen to the genre and its sub-genres.

Bluegrass is a big tent but we would place this squarely in the more progressive spot under that tent. We are very impressed. Not everybody can jump into this genre and make it sound authentic. You did just that.

The great vocals fit the genre (you remind us of Dan Tyminski who is in Krauss's Union Station and records solo)
The band fits the genre (love that acoustic solo)
The write fits the genre very well
And the mix presents it all on a great soundstage.

You've got that mix up against the ceiling but it still breathes and drives all the way through.

A big old sincere WOW!!!

Torrey,

I don't know you got got there but I am glad you did.

I think you have really found your voice.

This is the most "genuine" thing I have heard come out of you. I LOVE this.

You should do a whole album like this. This is a really great song man.

Janice and Bud hit this square on the head, has Alyson Krauss and Dan Tyminski foot-printed all over it. I can't imagine a better sound than this. It's hard to think of any other arrangement and/or style that would be a better fit. I'm simply blown away. This isn't just great - it's great and a half!

Thanks rayc! I always appreciate your comments! I agree about the phrasing of that one vocal line in the first verse. I remember when I recorded it having the thought, “I’ll fix that later “. I plan to re-record the vocals this weekend because there are several “off” notes here and there. T

Wow, Torrey, I just adore this. Everything's already been said above, so I'll just say that it's a great song (lovely pre-chorus section) superbly produced with top drawer vocals and terrific guitar parts. For me the backing vocals are highlight and when those 'ooohs' come in I get definite goosebumps! Love it!

Great feel to this song. love the harmonies and the mandolin. Really great vocals overall, those rich backing vocals. Excellent work. Great guitar fills too. Those vocals must have taken quite a bit of work but it all definitely worked out. Really enjoyed it.

What a cool intro. This one kind of shocked me. It is so different from your other tunes. Love the solo you did on the acoustic. Super vocal and backtrack. Loved the mandolin. So many cool sounds in this so. Definitely one of your best tunes....

Torrey,

I love this!

Bluegrass is such great sound and with the country-pop overtones you've thrown in, the journey you've just taken me on was really delightful. Not only is this arrangement a credit to the versatility of BIAB it's a terrific tribute to your musical talent!

This song sits very comfortably with all those other stunning creations you've given us in the forum.

All the best,
Noel

Hi Torrey,

you sure know how to write outstanding songs, man, what a killer that is.

I, too, think, that the style you ended up with is the absolutely right one, but the song itself is so good, I could imagine that it might work in others, too.

And I do know the surprising effect when youi test your composition with a hundred different styles - very often, or even most of the time, I finally decide to take one I would never have thought of before.

Vocals grat like always, and for the Ahs you must somehow have managed to get them done by John, Paul and George - awesome...

A great song - can't get enough of it !!!

Regards,

Stefan

Torrey,

This is a very Torrey-Bliss-like bluegrass.
I entirely agree with Robert.
Your pop sensibilities push a good bluegrass/country tune into the radio-ready zone.
A great on the road/driving song!
Very good vocals and your harmonies are always so smooth.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
