Hi Fellows.
I am on a quest to find a good solution for touch based controller for my setup. Basically what I want is a small 9"-12" touchscreen monitor that will respond well to "touch" as second screen. BIAB or DAW or something else, I find that I always run out of space. There are plenty of non touch based monitors out in the wild, but I want to accomplish two things at once. To have second screen as a monitor and if needed as a controller for sliders faders or other items such as Xoto Pad etc.

So far I have tried:
1) Using a second (Windows) tablet as a wireless monitor, but Windows Miracast based driver has a lot of latency even if wireless connection is directly to PC (not through the router)
2) Twomon USB2 wired Windows to Android screen extender. Same deal, too much latency for live monitoring and controller is out of question.
3)Couple of "apps" which are ages from being solid. I do not like "app" idea as it is app depended.
-----------------------------------
In ideal world, direct wired small monitor that is touchscreen with fast response times would work if used as screen extension of primary computer. My guess, that the only good candidate for this would be a portable screen with single USB-C (V2) / Thunderbolt connection. Supposedly it can handle Video, Touch and power at the same time through one cable / one connection.

I would be interested to know if anybody experimented with using a secondary touch monitor as a second screen + controller and was the result acceptable.
Thanks.

This is idea of what I had in mind, but this setup is through Miracast, not fast enough (could not resist including kitty):

The first question that came to my mind is, "What do you want to use the controller for?" I think this is a valid question because the Band-in-a-Box application shown on the Thinkpad display doesn't natively support touch so whatever you decide to use will be a jury rig effort at best.

Having said that there is a growing list of DAWs that natively support touch; +++ Multitrack Studio +++ and +++ Cakewalk by Bandlab +++ are two DAWs with built-in touch support.

I've had intermittent success using a +++ Korg NanoKontrol 2 +++ USB controller with Band-in-a-Box. The issue is consistence. The control works like a charm some sessions and other sessions it never works. I gave up trying. However, the controller works as advertised with Music Creator 6 and Cakewalk by Bandlab. A comparable product is the +++ Behringer X-Touch Mini +++ USB controller.

You can get single or multi USB touch overlay for most monitors on eBay. I did that with an old video poker machine, replaced the old CRT tube with a LED Monitor with a USB Touch overlay and used it for a video jukebox.
With AHK GUI you can make whatever touch/action buttons you need.

I put a little touch on my UFX1604 http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=405047

Jim, I want a small second monitor for several reasons.
In the case of BIAB to have mixer and VST windows opened NOT on the main window.

Controller part is for Cakewalk (or any other programmable) sliders or buttons. Like Xoto Pad for example.

Pipeline, yes there are workarounds and even scripts that will allow for the mouse not to be "stolen" by second screen... But as I understand all of these things can be merged into one wired USB-C (Alt mode) / Thunderbolt connection...
For power/video signal/touch.

I found this, but still hesitant as I have not read any user reviews from people who used it in similar manner I would like to use it:

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
