Hi all. This is a cover song from the 1820's. Sadly the original artist is not known.
With the help from Band In A Box I had great pleasure breathing some new life into this old tune.

The tune is in the key of "F" and only has two chords. Mixing was done in Studio one.
The tune is a little long winded but that's how it was written.
(Not sure why but the tune stop suddenly at the end on soundcloud, it doesn't on the original)

All comments welcome. Rob4508

Down In The Valley

1820 author not know
Down in the valley the valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow love, hear the wind blow
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow

For Roses love sunshine, violets love dew
The Angels in heaven, know i love you

If you don't love me, love whom you please
Put your arms round me, give my heart ease
Give my heart ease love, give my heart ease
Put your arms round me, give my heart ease

Bridge

Write me a letter, send it by mail
Send it in care of, the Birmingham Jail
Birmingham Jail love, Birmingham Jail
Send it in care of, the Birmingham Jail

Build me a castle, forty feet high
So I can see her, as she rides by
As she rides by love, as she rides by
So I can see her, as she rides by

Down in the valley, the valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow

Hey there Rob4580, thanks for sharing this! This is beautiful and the chord progression is very nice. Quite enjoyed those guitar licks too. Thoroughly enjoyed the fiddle to harmonize everything. Very captivating lyrics. Thanks for sharing!

I thought this was a really nice rendition smile You did a great job of modernizing it. Great arrangement, and a solid vocal performance too. Sounds very sincere. Not knowing so, I wouldn't have thought it was 200 years old.

Great work, and thanks for sharing!

Rob,

I hadn`t heard the song before and enjoyed the introduction through your fine vocal.
Your voice is well suited to the classic country style.
I liked where the story went in verse 3 with the poor bloke in jail dreaming of watching his sweetheart ride by!
Good work reviving this.

Your warm vocals carried this old tale very well. The Band was laid back, and when the fiddle shined, it did so in keeping with the vibe. Hadn't heard this song in years, though it was one we used to butcher on road-trips when I was a kid. Nice one.

Rob,

You've chosen the perfect BIAB band for this song. I love your gentle vocals. They complement the backing and the lyrics so well. This is definitely up there with your best.

Noel

Agree with everything said. The vocal is so powerful and fitting,
( is it too much of a stretch to invoke Leadbelly? )
we might overlook the masterful use of that Country Waltz BiaB
Style. But, we can't. Still in all, it is that melody. Not a musicologist,
but correct me if this song did not come from something of a Golden
Age of melody, 1820-1900, pre radio, when accoustic was everything.
Requests that come to mind are "Goodnite Irene," (If Clapton didn't
burn that one for another couple of generations,) "He's in the Jailhouse,
Now," and "Frankie and Johnny."
BTW, I've looked for 4/4 BB equivalent. Not yet found it.
