I wrote Last Night back in the early 90s. My first demo used a Farfisa organ to get the Tex-Mex feel of the Sir Douglas Quintet. When I recorded it for my first album in 1994, the band convinced me to use a Caribbean, Jimmy Buffet, arrangement. I like it but I recently wanted to see how it would stand up with a bigger beat. Hence, this new BIAB arrangement.

http://fredgrittner.bandcamp.com/track/last-night-2

LAST NIGHT

It was fun while it lasted
We really got blasted
I did things with you
That I never dreamed
I don't care about the money I spent
Or that foolish accident
We just had ourselves
One helluva ride

CHORUS:
But that was Last Night
And in the morning light
The fog is burning off
My blood shot eyes
Last Night
Was so right
But today keeps telling me
How it's gonna be
Last Night
Was the first and last for me

The wine that I tasted
Got me so wasted
I said things to you
You know weren't true
Love was on the tip of my tongue
You kissed me when the night was young
You stole that word away
When you touched my lips

CHORUS

Great groove. I can "hear" this Buffet-ized, but this has a deeper and honky-tonkier feel. Rythm-guitar, bass, drums, and piano hold it together for the vocals to surf. I liked the guitar solo too.

Well done fgrittner, this was wonderful! This sounds very full and I really dug the chord progression. That guitar really does shred! Reminded me a little of Warren Zevon. Keep it up!

Cheers,
Joe

I can see why the band wanted to take it the Jimmy Buffet direction.

Still, it's nice to have BIAB to play it the right way, without having to argue with the players. wink

Strong melody, memorable chorus, nice mix, good vocals and write. I enjoyed the listen.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Nice melody and lyrically sound. I don't know if you'll know this reference, but this reminds me a bit of the Da Yoopers. Well Done!

Hi Fred,

So nice to hear one from you. Wish you would post more often!

Love the driving rhythm with the backing tracks. And the drum fits so perfectly in the mix. That small variance in the chord progressions really kept this fresh. You vocal is super! Liked everything about this. Sometimes, as a listener, you sit back, close your eyes and smile as the music soothes your ears. That's what I just did.

Best to you.

Alan

Thanks, Joe! The Cm Bm C A progression makes the song in my opinion.

Thanks, Alan. You have great ears, so I appreciate your comments.

I have been very busy with live music and writing a memoir about my year in Vietnam courtesy of Uncle Sam—it is more about music than war... I will try to show up more often with a new or old tune of mine.

Thanks, Alan. I grew up quickly as an Army draftee. I play music with a fellow I met in Saigon. I was there in 1972 to the peace treaty was signed n 1973.

A good write, Fred. Well sung, as always.

Production is nice (though I thought the piano needed to be a bit "brighter"). A good mix overall.

The chorus really begs for harmonies.

Thanks, Greg. I used the vocal compressor very aggressively--I think that helped me keep the vocal/band in check.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
