I was lucky enough to hear them live several years back. This is perhaps their biggest "crossover" hit. Musically notable in this song is the predominance of minor chords and a "verse" section consists of mainly a one-chord jam. Though Thai classical and folk music, were of course founded on SE Asian instruments, scales, and rhythms, much of it is easily adaptable with western instrumentation and "theory". So...for you theory heads...what do you hear in the melody that can be explained with western theory? Obviously Minor chord heavy, but what kind of "progressions" would support this melody. Of course, there is Thai pop music (no less pop than in the west). One memory. Out in Bangkok early one evening before the crowds arrived, we stepped into a little bar/restaurant for drinks/eats while the live band was warming up. We got to talking with the band leader, one thing led to another, and he invited me to sit in his chair, play his guitar, and sing a couple of originals. Nobody paid any attention, but I had fun.

I was once holidaying at a resort on Koh Samui and they had a guy and his wife doing some country music. The owner of the resort (who is a friend of my wife) asked could I do a few songs. So I sat there with his guitar and did a few songs.
The guy doing the show was amazed. He had never really seen a westerner do live country music unrehearsed with just a guitar just singing a few requests. We spoke at length about the differences in approach. He wanted to come by the next day for a lesson. I will spend time with folks, maybe talk about methods but I don’t teach as such.
One of my Thai experiences. I have done other requests in Thailand and some with brilliant Thai backing bands.

During my time in Southeast Asia I visited some clubs and watched many television performances featuring western influence pop music. There are many astounding musicians everywhere.

Hi Tangmo,
Fun to hear those two songs again. I have heard both of them several times in Thailand. I personally like the second song the most - that is original Isaan / Thai music!
The first one is typically Western-inspired "big city" music in Thailand and the chord progression is very standard in modern dance/pop music in our countries, they just play it a bit slower and in a more light-rock style. Some years ago there was a Danish Band called "Michael Learns To Rock" who were very successful in Thailand making songs in exactly this style.

This is more my mother-in-laws style, but I dig it too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXXK4P2Ogs0Take a look at the "guitar looking" instrument in the lead on this. It's fretted, but the frets are oddly spaced for someone familiar with uke, guitar, or fretted bass. This suggests to me that the traditional Thai "octave" is something other than 7-tone. I'm nowhere near musician enough to figure it out, but I am near certain it's there. That long solo by the "log xylophone" near the end might give a clue too. This scale or scales can be played on western instruments, but there would be the assumption that certain notes are "off-limits". That's what I'm trying to get to. But I could be wrong. That happens a lot, lately. I wrote a song with Thai lyrics set to a piece done by a friend that he described as pentatonic skronking. Is that's what going on there? Pentatonic scales? (He had no idea I'd turn his piece into a Thai rock song, LOL)

I've seen them live and met the singer in a hotel restaurant in Khon Kaen in North Eastern Thailand (Isaan). They're very popular in Thailand. My G/F at the time was very excited to meet the singer.

The second video takes me back to Isaan and you see the influence of the style in so much Thai music. So many happy memories...
