Hi, Can anyone help me out with an issue with my Korg 05R/W Synthesis module.
I have made a pat file which works great in BIAB but the only problem I have is that when I play a new song I have to ask BIAB to send a GM mode by going to the menu - GM = Send Midi Message - Send General Midi on (no patches) then it works a treat. NOTE ** I have set GM Mode on at startup **
This is frustrating as I have to start the song THEN do the Menu-GM etc. I can't do it before I start the song, it just doesn't take.
I also have the Korg 05R/W in multi (i.e. GM) mode.

Any help would be very much appreciated as I am a novice when it comes to Synth Modules

Regards
Michee

I can't find the manual on-line for this module, so I don't think I can answer that question.

Sorry,

Gary

Hi Gary, Thank you for trying to help.
I have placed a copy of the owners manual here: Korg owners manual
Perhaps you could take a look and see if there is anything I can do to set it to play gm sounds automatically in BIAB.

Regards
Michee

George, the most likely cause of your problem is that you have probably set the device in any other mode than "Multi" mode.

See pg 20 of that manual.

Hi Mac, when I switch on the Korg 05R/W I set it to Multi (which is the GM Mode)
but it still refuses to play the GM mode until after BIAB has started the song
and then I go to the GM Menu (in BIAB) and have to send a gm mode on (no patches)
If I choose other options they don't work. Help!!

I take it that means you've already tried under the GM menu, "Auto Send GM mode at startup" right?

If so, I'm not sure at this point what it could be, biab or the synth.

One thing to try is a full reset of the synth box itself, if there is one, check the manual. Factory Settings will almost always work immediately with GM.

Hi Mac, Yes I have "Auto Send GM mode at startup" set (it has a tick next to it - although send midi - gm on (no patches) - seems to only work the one time.
If I have loop on then the GM mode sticks until I press play to regenerate.
I will try to see if there is a reset to factory settings on the Korg.

Thank you
Michee

MIchee,
Check and make sure the Backup Battery Low indicator isn't on, as that might not keep the settings. Page iv.

On Page 10, make sure the PRG filter in the Global Mode is set properly. Make sure the Global settings as outlined on page 11 are correct.

Let me know if anything there helps, and we'll go from there.

Gary

George I found this in a Korg forum. It's not exactly what you need but maybe a clue to the problem hope so, Wyndham

As far as I know, a "GM On" sysex command makes the module switch to Multi mode and reset all channels. That would fix point 1 and 3. I recommend to insert this at the beginning of all your midis, but take care you leave some time (maybe a quarter) before sending new program changes and controller settings, otherwise some of those might be missing.
I suppose there also will be a sysex command for changing the drum panning settings, propalby the manual or the SE-05 editor will help you here.

Hi Gary, The Backup Battery Low indicator doesn't show so I don't think that is the problem.
The Global Mode is properly set as per page 10 and page 11

Still no joy.

Hi Wyndham, Thanks for that. I have a program called GNMIDI that can batch add a GM On (which I have done) and it works a treat with midi files.
Now I just need it to work with BIAB song files. I know that I can save the song file as midi but I really don't want to do that when I have a mixture of RealTracks and midi.

Michee--

Please try this experiment:

Start up BB and do the things that you normally do when the module does not receive GM mode on properly.

But instead of hitting the Send GM On message, hit the MIDI Reset button once. That is the big exclamation point toolbar button (1).

Does the device then play in multimbral GM mode?

Hi Mac,
I Loaded up a song that used all midi instruments, started play.
The Korg Module is receiving midi as the midi light is flashing on the module as the song plays.
But the Korg seems to be selecting the non GM instruments??
I clicked on the Midi Reset button as you asked and it made no difference.
I also tried the GM Button which is supposed to send a GM Midi On, but no luck
It only works when I choose the command from the GM Menu i.e. Send Midi Message - Send GM Midi on (no patches)
That is the only command that works.

Regards
Michee

I don't know how deep you want to get into this, but the next thing I would want to do is to ascertain if BiaB is truly sending the right commands at startup or not.

This can be done by downloading and learning to use the free MIDI-OX program as a MIDI Monitor, placing its virtual connection between BiaB MIDI Output and your physical MIDI output port that the synth is connected onto.

See if the GM mode ON is actually being sent at startup or not...

http://www.midiox.com/

You can also see what other commands are goin' down the pipe, too.

This page may help decode MIDI messages for you, or may not, depending upon how those messages are being sent:

http://www.io.com/~jimm/midi_ref.html#Controller_Numbers

At this point, this would be the information needed to go further, for we need to see if there may be a bug in the new BiaB or not. Or perhaps there is something going on with that particular MIDI synth. Isolate to find out, in this case by monitoring the actual commands being sent to the unit.

Hi Mac, I will certainly download MIDI-OX as I want to learn about midi.
FYI I have been experimenting with BIAB and the Korg and I seem to have found a quirk
If I load a song into BIAB that has been saved in a previous version and play it I get the no go GM issue.
If I then click on the + to invoke the Korg 05R/W pat file that I have and then go through the routine of setting each instrument that way then everything works. I then save the file and after loading it back up (after loading other files) It plays back as intended.
Have you any idea what is going on?
It seems to me that when I set the OPT- Midi Devices- something is going wrong in there.
When I select the Synthisis/Sound card as Korg 05RW it asks if it's OK to install Korg 05RW patch/drum notes from D:\bb\GENMIDI.DK File.
Is this correct? should it not load as Korg.DK File?

Thanks Mac, at least I can now see a way around the problem.

Best regards
Michee

Use of the .pat file bypasses the GM mode.

Not sure, but if it was me, I'd try it both ways to see what happens.

Michee,
I neglected to even think about the .pat file. I use that for all my sounds, because I have a .pat file for my PA800. In fact, I've written .pat files for all my keyboards, and they are the easiest way to use BIAB with a synth, as far as I am concerned, plus, you get better sounds than just the basic GM stuff.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
