Hi, when I export drums from a midi style and load the midi file into a DAW the notes do not look as if they are adhering to the GM standard. Is there are setting somewhere I have overlooked or some documentation? (I have been using BiaB since the DOS days, but I am currently on BiaB 2014 Windows)

Could you provide a sample of the MIDI drums that you tried with?

In what way do they not appear to adhere to the MIDI standard? Incorrect notes, beat length? etc.

Welcome also to the forums.

Welcome to the forums.

I have been exporting MIDI drums from BiaB to my DAW for many years and they always have been GM. What drum sound source are you using? Many drum programs do not use GM as their main drum map but some will allow you to change the map to GM.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

It's the note assignments.

There seem to be some oddities when I bring it up in either of the two DAWs - before I assign the track to a drum vsti, more cymbals than it sounds like in BiaB and high mid and high tom being hit at the same time. What looks like a tom roll actually is a multi cymbal figure. That said I've listened to it back in BiaB and now I'm not sure. Going forward I'll spend a bit more time auditioning the drums in solo before I export. When I bring the tracks into my DAW I generally change the instrumentation a lot - and that affects the tonal balance of the song, and of course different drum vstis will also emphasise individual parts of the kit differently to the sounds in BiaB. Maybe it's psycho-acoustics rather than note assignments that are the problem.

Anyway thanks for your reassurance and prompt responses.

I have spent a bit of time over the last few days getting to know exported MIDI from RealDrums. I have found a few interesting things. Using Addictive Drums 2 with the GM set at first I could not get the drums to behave at all. I then looked at the Overheads and Room Mic tracks they were too high so cymbals, snare and hi hats were too strong. Turned down both the OverHeads and Room mics but then cymbals disappeared and lost bits albeit the snare and hi hat were better.

The toms were also out of kilter there was one hit way more powerful than others. The toms needed to be balanced to each other and also other tracks.

Really I need to set the Addictive Drums a little better by adjusting the volumes of the individual drums on the kit. Also how much each drum leaks into the room and overheads. This will take time but will only need to be done once. AD2 cymbals are covered by the overheads as near as I can work out. Mario will correct me if I’m wrong. The good thing in AD2 is that one has the ability to make the adjustments.

So to get the best out of the RealDrums MIDI one will have to do some preparation. (To me that’s all a part of the fun and learning.). It has taken a few hours but I now have it fine and taught myself a little more of managing MIDI in Reaper into the bargain.

Keep smilin’. Tony

Tony is right about AD2 but the same thing holds true to all MIDI drum sound sources. You must tweak each kit separately regardless of the sound source. For instance the perfect setting for a jazz brush or stick kit may not work for a rock or funk kit. Same for those kits and a metal or hard rock kit.

If I am having a problem getting the right blend of a single drum track I will split that kit by note in my DAW. Now the high hat open is on one track, high hat closed on another, bass, each tom and cymbal is on its individual track. I then work in MIDI to get the blend that I want. Many times I will add or delete notes or change the velocity on them. Also this allows me to either have reverb on the tracks that I want and not on those I don't or I can change the level of reverb on selected tracks.

I hope this helps and good luck.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
