One thing I have never liked is that it seems that you can only apply effects to whole tracks. I want to be able to apply an effect only to selected bars. Now I am well aware that I could cut that section of the track and paste it onto another track and apply the effects that way, but that is a REALLY long way around to do what I think I should be able to do: select a specific 16 bars (or whatever) and apply an effect only to that section. Can we do that now and I just don't know how?

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.
1. How much did you make in 2023? 2. Send it to us.
As John mentioned, you could go to Edit-Audio Effects and hard write any section you want, but that's more destructive than pasting to another track and using real time FX.
A variation of this is to make a copy of the whole track, put the effect you want on it, then automate the volume of the two tracks so one plays (and the other is at at zero volume; CC7=0) when you want the given effect and then the other takes over when you don't.
*Some* FX have a MIDI learn function where you can control it's behavior via MIDI messages, but that depends on the effect you are using and your MIDI set up.
It would be nice if we could control effects like the rest of the mixer, even if they just added the ability to record the mixer moves in an Aux slot .. at least we could control what goes to which FX & when.
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

This is why I use a DAW like Sonar.
It's really easy to set the resolution to anything from a measure to 1/128th of a quarter note. Simply add a new track, split the old one where you need and drag.... it's not difficult. And it saves you from having to destructively edit. Nothing sucks like doing a destructive edit only to realize a short time later you didn't really want to do that.
ALSO.... you can use FX automation in a DAW as well..... add the FX, assign to a track... yup, you gotta add a track anyway.... insert a midi controller, link it to the FX and then draw the automation envelope.....
more than one way to do this. choose your poison.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.com Add nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
Less heartburn to just copy the bars to another track and apply the effect. I want things as simple as possible.
I can't even get RB to respond to the volume control on my controller keyboard. As much as I used MIDI in my keyboard rig for live play back in my day (it was a MARVEL!!) in the DAW environment I am very green. As soon as you said "insert a MIDI controller" you lost me. Because my brain says "What is he talking about? I have a controller. An M-Audio MK3. That suddenly stopped sending controller parameter 7 to control volume."
And here is where the frustration grows. I was able to use that volume control until some random day, when I launched RB and suddenly my controller was no longer listed in the prefs. So I reinstalled the SAME driver from the SAME CD as I did originally. Rebooted the PC. The controller was then recognized again, but wasn't sending parameter 7. And then I said "I am not going to let this software stress me out ever again" so I have just been living without it.

The mixer channel aux send knobs can be automated in the same way as the faders. It's non-destructive and with eight aux sends, it's pretty flexible as well.
Ahh, good point ROG, I was thinking of the AUX slots themselves, but I guess you could also do it with the send dial on the channel.
Bernie, as ROG points out, you can put the effect in an AUX slot and then adjust the send for the desired track that controls that AUX slot send level and Record Mixer Moves in the mixer window to automate it.

Download and install this to your RealBand 2024 for updated print options, streamlined loading and saving of .SGU & MGU (BB) files, and to add a number of program adjustments that address user-reported bugs and concerns.
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
