The Simple Things

** I've uploaded a new vocal with less pitch correction and a small change in the lyric. **

I've not been around much the past three weeks - Di has been in and out of the hospital since December 18th. She's home right now and doing somewhat better. After I got her bathed and into bed this evening, I decided to write a song just because. This is what i came up with. I started it about 6:30 this evening and finished it about 11:00. A couple of the lyric lines come from some of DI's personal writings.

I wanted to redo the vocal but just didn't get to it. The pitch correction is a little stronger than I had intended - might redo the vocal in a few days. But, on the other hand, God knows I need all the pitch correction I can get!

Will go over to hear a few folks later tonight (actually, early morning). Looking forward to it!

As always, any and all comments are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Alan

The Simple Things
© 2019 Alan D. David, BMI / Diana Randall, BMI

(v1)
The taste of your lips, the soft of your touch
Hot coffee with my breakfast toast
No I don’t need no fancy stuff, there’s nothing there for me
It’s the simple things that I love the most

(v2)
The smile on your face, the sway of your hips
Hot butter on my dinner rolls
Champagne and caviar, that’s just not my style
It’s the simple things that I love the most

(CHORUS)
Tricked-out cars, Armani suits, I suppose are nice to have
And maybe even gold and diamond rings
But you in my arms when we’re making love, mean so much more to me
I just need the simple things

(v3)
Sometimes I stray, from the simple path
I get confused and don’t know where I’m at
And when I’m lost, can’t find my way, you know just what to say
With simple words that always bring me back

(v4)
You next to me, whispers in my ear
When the dark of night comes drifting down
The complicated world is gone, at last we’re all alone
With the simple things that make my world go ‘round

Very nice soul ballad with true hit potential in my ears. Beautiful melody and chording, perfect mix. The fantastic band selection supports the touching lyrics, so much truth in the words. The pitch correction works nicely as a modern effect in some parts but naturally I would like to hear simply more your natural voice smile

Hello Janne,

Thank you for all the very nice comments - sure do appreciate them! I've redone the vocal with much less pitch correction and changed a couple of words in the lyric. Glad you enjoyed it. Again, many thanks.

Alan

Hello Dave!

Thanks for dropping in for a listen. Glad it resonates well with you. It's a little different from what I usually do. I very lightly twin my vocal on the verses and added two harmony tracks on the choruses - a female voice singing higher harmony and a male voice doing lower pitch harmony. I was pretty happy with how all that turned out.

Best to you ...

Alan

Funky and catchy! Nice write, too.

While there's still room to finesse the pitch correction, all that takes time. And it's better to get something done and out the door than to worry about the small stuff.

Thanks for posting! I enjoyed it a lot. Well done.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Al,
A gem of a jazzy pop song! Really commercial material, but above all something beautiful you created in the midst of tough times.
Well done.

Alan,

A good write. From the heart.

Your mixes are always good. This is no exception. Nice.

I like the "pitch correction sound effect" on this. It works.

Best to Di!

A really nice breezy song and very catchy. I also liked the pitch correction sound on his one, seemed to fit the song nicely.
Nicely done.

Dear Alan,

I'm running out of adjectives, I must confess, so please forgive me, when I repeat that I think you're an outstanding songwriter, arranger and, of course, an admirable guitarist.

This song, too, is so full of soul, yet funky and with a great groove. I'm always excited to listen to your songs.

All the best to you and especially Di !!!

The simple things, indeed. Why complicate life when it already throws enough complexity at us?

We like this Al...the whole package.

Well done!

Dear Alan...

Ma-a-a-nnn, this song, "The Simple Things", hurtled me back in time somewhere in the late 70's or early 80's, to a too-crowded dance floor in a lounge on the South side of Chicago, holdin' 'er tight while the feelin' was right...

You. Got. This. Genre. Down. Ya' dig??? Pure R & B in a smo-o-o-th jazz wrapper, baby. Damn, but this is good, down-home, love-talkin' music for sure!

Let's not forget the plain n' simple truth shining from your thoughtful lyrics, too. They express the ultimate pleasures of being in a loving relationship with what is known as "The One". Anyone who gives more love than they take can "get to this" message way down deep in their soul, straight, no chaser.

Alan, listening to your song posts over the years convinces me that your music reflects intimate knowledge of the heart, and exposes the experienced sensibilities of a man who has lived his life arms-wide-open to feeling, because you return so much of those feelings in your songs.

I'm gonna let my sibs listen to this so they can take their own "walk down memory lane".

To one mellow fellow,

LOREN

P.S. Dear Ms. Di...

Obviously you have the desire
To keep fanning your fire
So, no matter how low life's got you feeling
I'm still praying for your healing!

I love this song Alan, especially the melody and changes in the verses which I found just so satisfying. Great lyrics, outstanding groove and spot on mix. A very enjoyable listen indeed!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
