bear with me, i'm still learning my way around after upgrading from 2008.

i have the 2018 Ultrapak and upgraded with this year's plus pak so I assume I have everything except maybe a few bonuses I've missed along the way.

before i decided to go the download route i got 2018 megapak on discs and then I upgraded to the ultrapak via downloads.

one of the discs is marked realcombos. i know what they are but do they automatically get loaded with certain styles? and is there a way to see which styles use them in the stylepicker?

thanks in advance

RealCombos are just the packaging of RealStyles for the Pro and Mega versions of BIAB (you said you originally had the Mega version). As far as I know, if you download all the 2018 style files and install them, they will include everything that would have been on the RealCombo disk.

BIAB 2008 was when RealTracks were introduced and they were handled differently than they are today (all RealTracks had to be converted to WAV files taking up a lot of disk space). A later release (I can't remember if it was 2009 or 2010 allowed the RealTrack WMA files to be processed natively without converting to WAV first.

Unless you specifically have any additional content disks from 2008, I would recommend not installing it at all. And since you said you upgraded your 2018 MegaPak to 2018 UltraPak, and assuming you have all the downloads (the program files, the additional content, all the RealTracks/RealDrums, etc), then I would just start with installing the downloaded files en toto. That will give you everything required for the 2018 Ultra Pak (you shouldn't need to install the Mega Pak first; everything in the Mega Pak should already be in the Ultra Pak). Then, I would run 2018 to make sure it works properly. I would also download any 2018 related patch files (you should just need the most recent) and any 2018 related RealTracks patch files and install them. Just to be safe, I would run the BIAB cleanup routine, rebuild the RealTracks picker, rebuild the RealDrums picker, and rebuild the Style Picker.

If you then upgraded to 2019 (presumably using the more inexpensive ProPak, which is just the new stuff), once you have that all working, then you should install the files for the ProPak for 2019 (but you didn't mention 2019, so not sure).

I hope this made sense.

Bob, John answered your question. I just wanted to pass along a tip in case it helps: Ctrl+T toggles between the 'new' GUI and the one like 2008.

There were major changes to the GUI in 2018 and version 2019 looks the same, but you can still have the old look if you want it. I used the 'old' view for a while last year until I learned to add Custom icons in the new GUI so I had everything I needed.

Bob,

As you know, a RealCombo is a band of RealTracks that sound good when collected together in a style.

+++ THIS LINK +++ has a list of the more than 300 styles available in the MegaPAK. The styles are grouped by the genres of Country, Jazz and Pop.

Underneath the style listing is a RealTracks instrument list that provide the RealTracks name as well as demonstration sound file links of the instrument solo and how it sounds with a RealCombo. The are grouped by genre.

I thought the StylePicker listed which RealCombos (Band) each of the 300+ styles are associated with but I don't see that in the 2019 release.

I thought another possibility might be to use the SongPicker to scroll through the names of demo songs but the song listings don't have the RealCombo names so you can't easily cross reference the information you asked.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
