I had this problem in my last pc and now the same problem is ongoing in this one. I kept NONE of the hardware from my old PM apart from my Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD Audio Interface. I know this isn't the issue as I've tried biab using the pcs own sound chip. I wonder would a graphics card help ? After about ten minutes or so the sound starts stuttering and gets really distorting. Seems worse using RT. Here's my equipment details

NOVATECH LTD PC-X003024 V1.0 ( bought just over 2 years ago )
Windows 10 Home (x64) Version 1803 (build 17134.523)
3.30 gigahertz Intel Core i5-6600
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
6144 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
2127.18 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
1474.13 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-224FB [Optical drive]
SanDisk SD8SBAT128G1122 (128.04 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 152755401914, rev Z2201000, SMART Status: Healthy
Seagate M3 Portable SCSI Disk Device (1000.20 GB) -- drive 2, s/n 18707E0307000077
ST1000DM003-1SB10C [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB) -- drive 1, s/n Z9A0M4Z9, rev CC43, SMART Status: Healthy
16272 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'DIMM_A1' has 8192 MB
Slot 'DIMM_B1' has 8192 MB
c: (NTFS on drive 0) * 126.77 GB 37.51 GB free
d: (NTFS on drive 1) 1000.20 GB 578.04 GB free
i: (NTFS on drive 2) 1000.20 GB 858.59 GB free

Drive D is where I keep all my music related programmes. I use reason 10 without any problems, sound forge 11 and also cool edit. Only seems to be biab that there's ever been any issues with which makes me think I need some software tweaks but I'm at a loss to know what to tweak.
Any help in solving this totally bamboozling would be much appreciated

By the way, I suppose I could take a sample of a recording but I'd have to find a way of doing it first

Graham, what else are you running concurrently on the PC. There has been heaps of stuff on various forums of things to turn off in Win 10. Most of the lovely rubbish one rarely uses e.g. Live Weather reports, News or various games (and their auto updates) Facebook and Messenger, Skype, a lot of stuff that sits in the startup screen. Also check what the system is loading up at power on. (Run MSCFG and check startup and get shy of stuff you don’t need at startup e.g. Adobe updates, Apple update things and the like, you can still start the programs if and when you want to). Maybe look at indexing services on the PC, if you are doing music and the PC decides now is a good time to sort the discs issues will occur. In some circumstances the PC might not see the playing of music as activity and slow down the process (a PC can go to sleep when playing music (it does not see it as activity) and not just because it is relaxed listening to your songs)

Only today I was showing a young fellow some stuff in Sonar. It ran like a hairy goat. Oh well, I thought. Then a few minutes later up pops a message “your printer update was successful”. There was one I missed.

I noticed stuttering on the olde laptop I use for gigs. I looked and saw the disc drive was going flat chat (very busy). I stopped Norton Security whilst playing I also stopped the wireless networking after all I did not need either whilst playing a gig.

Also on my main PC at home I deleted the onboard sound card (I use a Roland Quad Capture as an external card) having both the onboard and external sound cards running presented issues.

There is heaps of stuff on the WEB regarding what appears to be a general failing of Win10 and particularly version 1803 when it comes to audio.

I think 1803 was the release year for this version of Win10 judging by the way it does things. One day soon MS might get to version 20xx and have a system that actually works with non MS equipment (or even with MS equipment.)

Just some thoughts, there are so many things to consider.

Tony

Hi Tony,
nothing else is running when I use biab. I close ALL browsers and check what processes are running. I don't use skype nor messenger, nor do I play games, so as I said I'm pretty sure it's just some sound related software needing an expert tweak

Graham, dear Scot friend,

The current Windows 10 build from M$ is 1809. For some strange reason, auto update didn't work on my computer either. The problem manifests by the inability to drag items to the taskbar. M$ is aware of the problem and a fix will be available in the next update.

This COULD be your problem as well.

In addition to what you do I also disable my Ethernet card via the device manager. That stop everything from see the Internet.

I occasionally have the same problem as you. In my case it is because I have my audio interface buffers set to low for playback. In other words I use a very low buffer setting for recording but in a few cases I have to increase it so my playback is not stuttering and/or distorting. The higher number of tracks, both MIDI and audio, the higher the chance of the problem. YMMV.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Increasing buffers increases stability at the cost of speed. The speed issue is only an issue if you are playing an instrument via the device. However, if you are only using the device for play back that is not an issue.

For example, I use my guitar via the PC. The way my PC audio is set up audio has a round trip (into the soundcard through the PC and out) of about 10m/sec. 10m/sec is barely noticeable. If I doubled the buffers there will be more stability but it will increase the round time to 20m/sec which is noticeable. It can be difficult to play with a noticeable delay.

The delay is not an issue if only playing back.

With what I said about games and other useless programs that could be running. These can be running without your knowledge. They can be installed and set up to run automatically with Win10 updates. A lot of folk I deal with have all these nice icons updating and are totally unaware they are there and blissfully unaware they do use cpu and internet traffic.

Graham,

By the way, awesome computer specifications; I'm sooo jealous!

You mentioned the computer is about two years old. I also noticed your computer has a Seagate M3 Portable SCSI Disk Device as drive 2. Does your motherboard have a SCSI interface built-in or is the drive interface part of a plug-in, add on card? Have you checked with +++ Novatech Technical Support +++ or the motherboard website or plug-in card manufacturer website to make sure all the hardware drivers you need are up to date?

Hi Jim, all drivers are up to date. I phoned novatech ages ago and they confirfmed it WAS a software issue, but not knowing this programme couldn't suggest a fix

Graham, two things come to mind:

First, yes, increase the playback buffer size for all the reasons clearly given above. Lower it for recording to reduce latency, and raise it for playback because it doesn't affect anything (unless you play along with a connected instrument / keyboard).

Two, the "ten minutes in" comment makes me wonder if you could possibly have an unregistered plugin playing havoc. I know you said you have no other programs running, but how about some trial version of a plugin that came with the new computer? Or some non-audio program 'phoning home'. DPC Latency Checker (free) will tell you if there is something interfering after ten minutes. There are great instructions on the site. Let it run for awhile. Ignore the message it isn't optimized for Windows 10.

Possible causes of that kind of distortion:
1-a plug-in that is in demo mode.
2-a near by ham radio operator
3-WiFi, Bluetooth, phone interference
4-your router to close to the computer

I have similar recording problems with all of the above.

Good luck.

I've removed my behringer module to see if it's that what's causing it

I've gotten weird noises before by having my cell phone too close to the computer.

This was goin on long before I got a decent cell phone. Most of the time it's switched off. My pc doesn't have blue tooth, my wife keeps her phone's bluetooth switched off all the time so it ain't that. It might just be my Behringer module as I said. It's the only thing I kept from my old PC

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
