A little wishful thinking···

RAINING WHISKEY

if it was raining whiskey tonight
this heart you broke might set right
no umbrella, no hat, just tip my head back
and pray there's no clearing in sight

pain beyond belief
so if the clouds could send some relief
i'd thank the gods, i might beat the odds
maybe i could drown this grief

if it was raining whiskey tonight
pouring hard as it can get
i could open wide while the heavens cried
catch enough that i could forget
would it help? i don't know. it might
if it was raining whiskey tonight

the sky an endless moonshime still
i could lay down and drink my fill
on and on until the hurt was gone
half afraid it never will

if it was raining whiskey tonight
pouring hard as it can get
i could open wide while the heavens cried
catch enough that i could forget
would it help? i don't know. it might
if it was raining whiskey tonight

Hi Floyd,

What a great title and hook. You always have this talent for putting a new and original slant
onto a heartbreak story.

Loved it all. Very taken by the kick drum and the tremolo guitar was just perfect.
Wonderful vocal and harmony with your trademark sound.

As usual, a faultless arrangement and mix.

The slightly unpredictable chord progression is a touch of genius that fools the ear causing more mental focus. Kudos, Floyd.

Excellent word pictures, imagery and production.

As modern country as it gets without a cow in the narrative.
Lovely work from all perspectives.
There's a quite loud string squeak or similar at 2.50 that you may care to notch out but that's a matter of taste.

Top notch writing disguised as simplicity. Again, the internal rhymes you build so wonderfully into your write are astounding!

if it was raining whiskey tonight
this heart you broke might set right
no umbrella, no hat, just tip my head back
and pray there's no clearing in sight

pain beyond belief
so if the clouds could send some relief
i'd thank the gods, i might beat the odds
maybe i could drown this grief

...and on and on. FANTASTIC! All done in a way that the casual listener would hear it and "just like" it. It's soooo well crafted.

Quote:
pouring hard as it can get

I have to ask if you meant this to be able to be taken two different ways?
Actually referring to it raining a lot
But also the strength/proof of the whiskey
WHO DOES THAT?! I'm AMAZED!

Quote:
the sky an endless moonshime still

Slight typo, however...hearing it, I thought you were going to say "the sky an endless moon" THEN you added "shine!" THEN "still!"
Again, top notch.

The Chorus opens up and is powerful without being overwhelming. It's in nice contrast to the rest of the song. To me it feels like a failed relationship...having those moments of strength in dispair; yet questioning and having uncertainty. A little bit of hunched over, then a little bit of standing just a little taller.

The arrangement and band is a perfect fit. I LOVE that guitar! The little embellishments in the chorus are really nice as well. A lot going on without being busy!

Those drums! Specifically the toms. WOW! The hats had some nice little flourishes as well.

All in all a very believable band.

Quote:
Just your typical Country song...

Right...you ain't fooling this guy! It may sound that way; but nothing about it is.

I could see/hear this being on the radio.

Well done!

FJ,
Interesting theme. California comes to mind...I know that they have drought ordinance in some counties prohibiting collecting rain water. I wonder if it would stop people if it was raining whiskey?

Great tune and production. I enjoy following your quest in experimenting with music genres. I do not believe it is "typical".

There is nothing "typical" about any song I have ever heard from you, they are always special regardless of the genre.

Cool writing and man, love that chorus! Very powerful.

Listened though both the studio monitors and the 'phones; the "band" sounds awesome, drums (you used loops?) and bass sound fabulous, strong and powerful and each with their own space in the mix.

Very nice, Floyd, always a pleasure to listen to your music!

Killer arrangement!

the song builds beautifully

I love all the instrument choices

the drums are punchy, the toms roll thru my headphones

super sound

awesome write, seems to me there's a positive lilt in your voice even when

singing a very sad song, an fj signature thing

I don't think it gets much better,

Hi Floyd,

Once again you nailed it. It is a really good song - the lyrics and the composition are working so well together and everything is sitting perfect in the mix (as we have come to expect from you).

I read the lyrics before I listened and when listening to the song afterwards, the music and your vocal just felt as a perfect fit to the lyrics.

Great work on this! I hope you put it on Spotify - I know quite a few people at my work who would love to have this kind of song on their playlist.

Oh, and I love whiskey - so please let it rain tonight! smile

Thank you for sharing!

Floyd, I ain't much for whiskey, my ears enjoyed drinking this song. Cleverly constructed lyrics. I like how you opened each musical phrase in the chorus with the high notes and then went down with the melody.

Floyd,

If this were a typical country drinking song I doubt I`d be sitting here thinking Wow! What a fine song. The chorus ( and harmonies) is so good, your vocals seem to have just the right amount of ache.
The arrangment is faultless... of course!

Thanks, Ray. I hear the string squeak (knew it was there). I typically leave them - as part of "what makes a performance" - it generally seems natural to me... unless it really detracts from the overall sound or feel of the song, which in this case I don;t think it does. Thanks for the careful listen.

HTL beat us to the rhyme structure comments but from the get go we noticed how creative they were. Not one whit forced and very effective.

And then there’s the three verse / chorus structure that states it all in both a concise and powerful manner.

And then there’s the signature floyd vocal that is always strong and emotive - irrespective of the genre.

And then there’s the band...man, did that guitar nail it. A highlight within a great mix.

And then there’s J&B saying again, “ain’t he good! And now let’s have good small batch shot”

Thanks for the nice review, Dave. The drums are from a Drums On Demand file - a full song, stereo drum track that I chopped up and used pieces to reconstruct this song...

Man, this is well done! Love the mix. Everything is in its right place. Good full sound, very tastefully done! Your vocals are spot on and expressive as ever. Good write, some really good lines in this one.

I've been out for a few weeks, and have really missed a lot. I'm sure glad I was able to get back to hear this one! (Good news, for me anyway. Tomorrow is my last day on this job, and my schedule should be much better, so I should be around a lot more.)

Really loved this one!

Another spectacular write!!! Love the groove.....draws you in (the spagetti western guitar is a perfect fit). It's got heart, it's got wit, colorful metaphors, and oodles of fantastic lines! Some of my faves are:

no umbrella, no hat, just tip my head back
and pray there's no clearing in sight

and

i could open wide while the heavens cried

Simply does not get any better than that!!

Needless to say, production and mix are top drawer! (but I'll say it anyway)

Great, great stuff Floyd!!!

Take care. Greg

Another great write, supported by a fine vocal. That tremolo guitar is a standout and is so present it sounds like it’s right here in the room. You certainly seem to have a large seed bank of song ideas! Your manipulation of the real tracks is nothing short of remarkable. The attention to detail not only in the write but also in the arrangement and production is a hallmark in all your songs. I expect we are in for a lot more of these musical gems in 2019. Outstanding job, Tom

What a tune! Love the sincerity in both your vocals and instruments here. Really hits the soul. Nicely catchy on the hook to - it manages to be an earworm while still tugging at the heart string. I personally loved it!

Nothing I'd change here - thanks for sharing smile

floyd,

Beautiful modern country ballad!
I completely agree with Rob.
What a great title and hook. You always have this talent for putting a new and original slant onto a heartbreak story.
And I also completely agree with HearToLearn.
The rhymes you build is wonderful.
And super vocal as usual.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hey floyd,

According to Soundcloud, I first listened to this song 2 months ago. After I listened, I set the song aside to come back and write a couple of thoughts... Where did all that time go?

As late as late can be, here are those thoughts smile

What first grabbed my attention here is how you've use the rhyme scheme for the limerick, i.e. AABBA, to present the verses. A long time ago, I read in a songwriting book that this rhyme scheme is a good one if humour is required. At the time I read that, I didn't agree because, for me at least, the humour in limericks is about the words and the rhyme scheme is just how that word content is delivered.

For example...

  • A writer of songs named floyd
    Had wonderful skills he employed
    And he delivered his words
    As if they were chauffeured
And all who heard them, enjoyed

While the above maybe creates a small smile, I'm pretty certain that that's not due to the rhyme scheme. (If my students at school heard or read this, they would definitely groan!)

What you've shown us all in "Raining Whisky" is that the AABBA rhyme scheme presents serious lyrics with pizzazz. It also flows along well.

All the best,
Noel

Well,

It looks like I missed this one when you posted it. It's a sad day to miss a new Floyd Jane song. Your professionalism shines on this in every aspect. It's a rhyming scheme I used to use a lot, but not too much recently. Maybe I need to rethink that.

Love the higher EQ accent on the drums in the chorus - it's a great drum track! Typing through a smile. I like that!

Alan

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
