I am reading a book that is jaw-droppingly good on the craft of writing a best-selling novel. It is by Donald Maass, a best-seller's literary agent who also has written 16 novels and sells a lot of books (his agency averages 150 per year).

I find it fascinating what he has said about the attributes of the people who sell millions of books, as opposed to, say, three.

Maass says they all have the same attributes.

I find the complete list to be very interesting, which includes volunteering, mentoring and constant solicitation of feedback.

Very, very interesting. I think I see some parallels to songwriting. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I’ve been working with professional novelists for thirty years. I’ve thought a lot about what separates the successful ones from those who aren’t. The good ones don’t go it alone. They have sounding boards: critique partners, agents, editors, and key readers. They are students of the craft. They read, review, teach, mentor, volunteer, and stay open.

writing is writing. the same general rules tend to apply.

but really, when you think about it..... doesn't this apply to most other things too?

Interesting David.

From what I've heard, the ultimate success formula is simple.

1-Decide what you want
2-Take action towards it
3-Notice if it's working or not
4-Change if necessary
5-Repeat

It's not easy, even thought it's simple. I don't think most people ever apply it. Most are happy with where they are.

Thanks for sharing man!

Good stuff!

I would change #1 to set realistic goals. IMHO the biggest downfall with expectations is we have a tendency to set very high and often unachievable goals. For instance a New Year's resolution of "I'm going to lose 100 lbs" is unrealistic whereas a goal of "I'm going to lose 5 lbs a month until I'm satisfied with my weight" is realistic. YMMV

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

HTL,

This is very similar to what I have heard Richard Branson and others like him say. (I met Branson, actually, once upon a distant moon, and he asked me if I wanted to go to a party with him and Iggy Pop. Guess what I said.)

On success in general, I have had the fortune to meet some super successful people like him and they were SO NICE. And very down to earth. Not at all what I expected.

When I met Branson and was trying to interview him he asked me a gazillion questions about MYSELF. I had to remind him the interview was about him. But he made me feel like the most important person on the face of the earth. 10 feet tall. I remember thinking: God this guy is awesome. I would like to work for him. Man, I would do anything in the world for this guy.

Then I thought:

"Oh I get it. I see why he is the most successful entrepreneur in England now."

There's a lot of success to be had in making other people feel great, I think.

A couple of relevant quotes by Zig Ziglar.

"You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want."

"If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere."

Very interesting indeed. A good friend of mine who was a musician actual switched to writing novels a couple years ago. There definitely appears to be some similarities. Like Guitarhacker said - writing is writing. I applaud people who can write a whole novel. That's a lot of commitment.

I might have to check that book out - thanks for sharing David smile

That's really neat. I've always wondered how many parallels there were in regards to the arts and trying to be successful in any of those fields.

I was told, informally, by a successful literary agent that some of the best writers welcome the editorial process, meaning, they don't hold it against the editors for making changes in their copy. Made sense to me. Bearing in mind, this entailed commercial publishing.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
