Has anybody ever tried to use percussion more like an actual instrument than just a timekeeping mechanism? I just started working on something of that nature and will be soliciting parts from forum members, as usual with the caveat that in the final mix your part may not make it, based on how many people send a part. It CAN'T be 9 minutes long just to avoid risking hurting people's feelings.

I am laying the rhythm bed in now. Rog will be looking at doing a fretless bass line, but in general I'd be looking for people who are interested in 16 bars of solo space over a repetitive chord pattern of Dm, Em, F, Em. Also, if we have bass players who want to take a shot, open to that too. One thing that is great about working with Rog involved is that he understands that no 2 people will always hear the same thing in their mind's ear and if he tries something and I don't like it, he is fine with me discarding it or asking for a tweak. Hoping I can talk Notes into doing something either on sax or wind controller, maybe Jazzmammal Bob can do some piano, Mr Snyder, Herb, Mario, Rog... my go to guitar people! I LOVE listening to people's musical "opinions" about how a solo should be on a given rhythm bed. You have the "How many notes can I fit here" type, and the "mild and tasty" type, and they are all perfectly valid perspectives. I love this stuff!!

If you don't mind, I'll take a swing at a solo with no expectations of making the final cut. smile

I've got a bass player who's willing to give the bass part a try as well.

I can't really help with the percussion, though. I was listening to the instrumental break on Styx's Castle Walls last night, and noticed to hear how sparse the percussion was. Whenever I add percussion, it ends up a hilarious - but entirely unusable - mess of congas, toms and the kitchen sink.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Things like tuned drums and tuned bells can be interesting. Tuned kitchen sinks seems like a little more of a challenge.

When the rhythm bed is done I will post it and whoever wants to can take a swing at it. It is largely like a serene, trance inducing thing that was inspired by listening to some waves hit the rocks down south, and somewhere there must have been an obstacle that disturbed the timing of the waves rolling in to where they were not completely rhythmic. That kind of thing catches my ear. Like "Hey, the Savannah River has an arrhythmia."

I also love when percussion in a tune plays a major role. I think it's really underappreciated.

HI Eddie

Well I don’t feel competent enough to have a go, but it seems to me it may depend on your definition of percussion instruments. Many fit that definition for me, like Tubular bells, Timps, and Vibes, Glock etc, but are also chromatically tuned so capable of melodic phrases.
Not that that stops folk doing things like Skin deep and Wipe out with non Chromatic Percussion.
Just my thoughts.

Exactly that, Mike. Tuned drums and stuff. I may even fill glasses with water to replicate a scale and record a loop on them. When it comes to this stuff, I don't believe there are limits.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
