Hi

Sorry, I feel this is a very noob-y question but thankfully this feels like a pretty non-judgmental forum smile

I've just got an audio interface - a Behringer UPhoria UMCHD204HD. I am trying to record my electric piano through it (Kawai ES110) and I'm currently using the L line out (jack to jack) into the first input on the audio interface.

It is recording, but to the left channel only. I can easily copy the left track to the right channel after finishing recording, but is there a way to have it record straight to both channels?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm not much good at explaining this stuff, so if anything didn't make sense please do say!

Connect L out of keyboard to L input on interface.
Connect R out of keyboard to R input (2nd one) on interface.

If the interface supports it, pan the L&R to 100% L&L, otherwise you will record both outputs to both channels/tracks.

Then in your software, mix the output as desired.
The key is to get both the L&R outputs of the keyboard into the computer .. then mix them after they get routed as such.

Your unit has a Stereo/MONO switch, which may come into play.

Hey rharv, thanks a lot for your reply.

Is there a way to get it to record to both channels using only 1 input on my audio interface? I may want to use the other input at the same time for another instrument.

Cheers!

Maybe using the MONO/Stereo switch I mentioned, or if the unit allows panning the input to both channels.

Since you are only recording a MONO channel when one line is connected, why would you want to record stereo in that scenario?
Just wasted track data duplication.

I'd use MONO when one cable is connected and Stereo when two cables are connected.

FWIW, your piano will likely sound better in stereo, using both L/R connections in the long run.

If you are ending up with a stereo track and sound on only one side you may need to simply change the target track type to MONO instead, so it sounds centered (or panned wherever you want).

Knowing which program would help too, as RB also allows you to decide the track format, so if you are recording MONO you can record on one MONO track, and when using stereo you can record to either a stereo track or 2 MONO tracks.

In BiaB I'm not sure how much of the above is true.

Hi,

In Band-in-a-Box, you'd go to Options - Preferences - Audio, and change the "Audio track type for this song" and "Preferred default track type for new songs" to Mono (since we'd rarely need to record in stereo).

In RealBand or PowerTracks, you'd right-click on the track before recording, and change Track Type to Audio - Mono, as Rharv described above.

Thanks

Thank you both.

The mono/stereo switch on my box doesn't seem to do anything, although I may not be utilising it properly... I don't know as my Behringer box doesn't seem to have any kind of user manual other than a very basic quick-start guide.

In any case, it's not the end of the world. Either I can record to a mono track, or use both inputs if I'm not recording anything else at the same time, or record to one-sided stereo and then just mix it after recording.

Cheers for the help!

Hi Mike,

I'm guessing that mono/stereo switch only affects the input monitoring channel (that's usually the case with other interfaces I've used).

Thanks

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
