Good Day,

I'm trouble shooting my Father in law's laptop because he swears that after installing BIAB 2015 via a download link he received from PG Music, malware was installed on his computer. He installed the program a few weeks ago. I'm checking to see if this has come up in the past.

When the computer is fired up, a black login screen comes up with a row of white colored chinese/japanese/etc. characters (not sure of the language) in a blue box which has a spot to enter a password. If the computer password is entered then the windows login screen appears as usual. Enter the same computer password and the computer goes to the desktop. I've tried to attach an image but the 'Enter a Image' button asks for a web link address.

The computer is running windows 7. I've run every anti-virus program I can find, every malware program, run windows startup repair and chkdsk, but it is still there.

Second question. If I uninstall BIAB, can I reinstall it with the serial number listed in the Help-About box in the program? Or, will it get flagged for multiple installations?

Thanks for the help.

If I had to guess, I'd say they are Chinese characters and not Japanese. The Japanese are not known for hacking, whereas the Chinese are.

Before getting drastic, if the laptop were mine I'd try running one utility first: Malware Bytes. I had a laptop that got infected with a virus several years ago, and nothing I tried would get rid of it. Not even Spybot. Then I heard about Malware Bytes and decided to give it a try. It found the little beasie and put it out of my misery. If you've already tried Malware Bytes, well then . . .

Then I'd get aggressive. Make a list of every program you have on your C: drive, which will make it easier to remember which to reinstall. Then copy all data on C: to a safe place. Then format the drive and reinstall everything. Then I'd double check with PGM on the file's cleanliness before I downloaded it. And then I'd run any and all of my malware utilities on that file before I booted it.

Yes, that's a lot of work, but it's one sure way to get rid of the infected file(s). I dunno of any shorter, more selective way that will work any better than Malware Bytes.

Very good advice to run Malwarebytes first.

If you need to reinstall, I don't remember what year PG Music started using activations. You get three each version. If version 2015 had activation, it's probably in the same place it is now: Help, Utilities, Special Options. If you don't see anything there, then version 2015 didn't have this feature and yes, you can reinstall using your serial number (which you need in any case).

I doubt the problem came from BIAB and tend to think it was a coincidence that the problem showed up when it did. Remember also that Windows 7 is nearing the end of its supported life and it would be better to upgrade that PC to Windows 10 with Windows Defender always running.

A computer expert in my area has a list of things to do to eliminate computer infections. It is called the security tango:
https://www.securitytango.com/

All of the programs in the security tango are free ones. Just follow the instructions to a T and you will get back to running perfectly.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

It appears that serial number registration began with BIAB 2015. The "my products page" also says "Note: Only serial numbers issued Oct 29 2014 or later can be registered on this page."

Thanks, John; I wasn’t sure when the change happened.

Hello,

You can reinstall Band-in-a-Box on the same computer as many times as you want without affecting the number of activations you have available. If you do run into any problems with the activation, contact us.

The strange Login screen issue you're having is unrelated to the installation of Band-in-a-Box and would be coincidental that it started happening some time after your father installed the program.

I have not encountered any issue similar to this before, however as a first step I suggest translating that 'login' screen. One way to do that is to download the Google translate app onto your phone and take a picture of it...

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I'm going to have to reinstall Windows 7 as I've run Avast, Malwarebytes, ESET online, Superanti Spyware, rootkit scanner, Bitdefender and Windows sfc/scannow and chkdsk.

In another forum site I was in some time in the past, there were a few guys there who would yearly, wipe their computer clean and reinstall the software they used.

Not a problem if you keep all the original install disks and any software keys needed. They swore by this process, claiming it didn't take very long and they essentially ended up with a computer that ran like new every time.

I've actually done this a few times.... but not because I thought it was a good idea.... things got so bad in the machine there really wasn't a better option. Nothing says start again like broken code in the OS.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
