Hi

I have just noticed that Sforzando wasn't working in my version of Band in A Box, and as far as I can tell it is because I am running Windows XP. Is this correct? Is there any way I can use the Hi Q sounds, and SFZ files in general, with BAIB running on Windows XP?

I notice on the Plogue website (home of sforzando) that the plugin requires Windows 7 or better. It's listed at the below link under "Requirements".

https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html

If sforzando is not installed, BIAB should default to the the installed softsynth that comes with it.

I'm guessing that your Windows XP is 32-bit. If so, and if I recall correctly, SFZ+ player should let you play PG Music's HiQ sfz sounds.

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/sfzplus/

On my Windows 7 system, the PG Music HiQ sounds are found under...

C:\Program Files\PG Music Inc\Band-in-a-Box Sounds\Programs

I'd imagine that they are installed in a similar location on your computer. SFZ+ could be loaded as a VST for a MIDI Supertrack and then they HiQ sfz soundfont could be loaded into SFZ+

Hopefully some of these thoughts are useful for you.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks Noel,

I will give that a try. My Windows XP is 32 bit, yes.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks

It seems SFZ+ is no longer available. Cakewalk seem to have closed down. Can anyone recommend another sound font player that will work with XP?

I googled soundfont player for windows xp and came up with these three, note that there may be more. It appears that these are different versions of the same program.

I have no experience with these as XP is long gone on my systems.

Good luck.

Since SFZ+ was offered for free, I'm hoping it's okay to offer it, so here is a copy of it from my computer (I couldn't find my original installation files, so this is just from my VST folder on my computer). It should work, but I can't guarantee it. There are no sounds, just the standalone executable and the DLL to load as a VSTi.

Remember, SFZ+ is not a multi-timbral synth, so you have to load a new instance in a different slot on each track you are using, and then assign the SFZ or SF2 instrument you want from within SFZ+.

Thanks guys.

I downloaded both of these options and tried them, but I haven't had any luck with either. The Soundfont Midi player isn't a VST, so it can't be opened from within BIAB.

SFZ+ I can get to open within BAIB, but when I load a Hi Q instrument, or any other SFZ file, it appears to load up but produces no sound.

Hi,

I see this is an old thread, just found it occasionally and it seems to be unsolved.

On XP sforzando v1.9333, which comes with the newer BiaBs, doesn´t install, because it is not compatible to xp. But the older sforzando v1.901 works and it plays the Hi Q sounds without problems.

I have it, just pn.

Thanks, that's good to know. Also v1.901 would need to be installed manually from C:\bb\data\installers. The Band-in-a-Box installer itself will only install the latest version.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
