A couple more frustrations that I have experienced with entering lyrics mainly into the bass clef, although I did try switching to treble clef and there was no improvement.

The tune I was working on was "Cheatin' Heart (Your)" by Hank Williams Snr. If you know the tune, you will be aware that there is an anacrusis which has the words "Your Cheatin'". Well, using the normal lyric entry from the menu 'Edit', 'Lyrics', 'Enter lyrics at current bar'; you only get as far as the fourth letter in "Your", which is of course 'r'. The program pops up a box with the message "Select a clef to insert a hard rest". I could not get around this message in any way.

The second problem I have encountered recently is an inability to enter a new note over the top of your last note, which is the same. You have to put in a rest and then your note, or put your note on the wrong ledger line and slide it into place. This makes lyric entry slow and frustrating. Particularly when I have always said that the Band-in-a-Box note entry method is the best and fastest program because you do not have to select note lengths from a menu. I stress, it only happens when the note you are trying to enter is the same as the one preceding.

And, speaking of lyrics, no particular problem here. Just wish the size of line based lyrics could be increased to equal the size of the chords-----or at least a better match between the two. Probably more appropriate for the wish list.

Hi Larry,

Have a look at the below post. It might help.

Hi Noel,

Thank you for solving Larry's problem, which in my opinion really wasn't a problem but a bit of know-how which you explained. However, my opening post with the two problems; one with lyric entry and the other with note entry have not been tackled.

I suppose the first thing to confirm is that other people are experiencing the same problem and that it isn't just me and my computer. But really I don't think it is me.

Let's tackle the lyric problem first. Now, every time I try to enter the letter 'r', the program refuses and puts up the "Select a clef to insert a hard rest". It works okay until you get to the first 'r'. For me it is making the Band-in-a-Box program almost useless, because all the tunes I enter have lyrics, which I need to print for my band in Lead Sheet format. i.e. Notes, chords and lyrics.

I would stress that I am using the note-based lyric entry method with my 2019 Audiophile version and a mouse and keyboard entry method. I am a very fast touch typist and I just can't believe that nobody else has encountered this problem. Unless the user base has changed so radically that nobody uses note-based lyrics these days.

My other problem with note entry still exists, which I can overcome with the methods I mentioned in my opening post but that is too time consuming and not a problem I am prepared to put up with.

Frankly, it really is impractical to go on using the program unless I can solve these two problems. I am a week behind with my production of tunes already.

Hi Graham,

You've got me thinking!

Regarding the "r" and rest, something similar also happens with "n" for a note, I wonder if this might be related to entering the lyrics while in Editable Notation Mode.

I've found that the new note entry method that PG Music have incorporated within BIAB restricts use of some letters when the Editable Notation Mode is active. If the Editing mode is turned off, though, so that one is simply in "Notation Mode", the letters seem to be able to be entered within lyrics.

I haven't yet encountered anything similar to the second problem you mention. The only thing that springs to mind is to wonder if "Single Note" entry is active.

Regards,
Noel

Another problem with lyric entry on BIAB 2018 that's after you've entered the lyric for a song then later you want to insert or delete number of bars. The lyric screen don't adjust for inserting/deleting action

Thanks Noel, I only had to change the Editing mode once and the problem letters are now able to be typed in Note Entry mode. grin

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
