I always laugh when I read an article like this. Its like saying trumpets solos are finished. Or piano solos are finished! Or (insert any instrument here) solos are finished. Its all cyclical. Always has been, at least in popular music. YMMV
PS IMHO Charlie Christian was the first to have an electric guitar solo in popular music. Note jazz big bands were popular back then.

From my reading the article is centered mostly around rock. I don’t recall a period of that genre over the past 60+ years for which it was not considered guitar centric.

From my reading the article is centered mostly around rock. I don’t recall a period of that genre over the past 60+ years for which it was not considered guitar centric. I agree. My point was there were guitar leads prior to the electric rock guitar invasion. I apologize for not being more specific.

I'm the one who could've been more clear. Chuck Berry followed some even earlier rockers (think Rocket 88) but I believe he was the first one to stand on stage singing lead and soloing on a guitar. That established a pattern that helped define rock for decades.
Heck, Janice and I love T-bone Walker and he played the heck out of an electric guitar in the 40's!

regardless of whether or not it is "absolutely true", there does seem to be a trend AWAY from including a guitar solo in contemporary songs.

Chuck got a lot of his licks from T-Bone Walker, all those double stop things he did were first done by T-Bone AFAIK.

It's not just rock, it's modern country too. Country used to be all guitar licks and solos. Yesterday I drove about 125 miles and decided to listen to an LA country station, KFrog, the whole way. I heard some pretty good songs done in the rock style with very loud drums that we've discussed before. Overall it was good listening but very little guitar other than basic strumming, a few licks here and there and not one solo in over two hours of driving. Guitar has become a prop for the moment but I agree, all this will cycle around. Also discussed many times here, the market is so fragmented now you can find anything you want it's just not on the Billboard Top Ten so much.
