Sort of new to this, haven't used BIAB in years then just last year bought it mostly for fun with guitar playing. Anyway I want to be able to create my own arrangements (solo guitar/solo jazz) of songs. I am not sure if I have the right question to find the right answer so I will just explain what I am trying to do to see if BIAB can do it, or I am going about this the wrong way.

I pick a song (not in BIAB just a song I want to make an arrangement for), and then come to BIAB and start manually entering the melody I want in the guitar staff/notation editing mode. I use the melody channel because it seems like the right channel for this task, but I might be wrong about that. I want to be able as a next step to enter bass notes in the same area I am entering the melody (before you just hit me with a why do that? because I want to create chord-melody solo guitar arrangements with bass notes that is what I got this for). Problem is no where in the notation editing mode does it allow for notes played at the same time!?!? WHAT PG MUSIC!! that is lame...alright it seems the trick is to use the "chord editor" on the main view or the modal dialog to set chords, but then I have no control over my melody note sticking or the placement of the chord relative to the melody or if I just want a bass note on the down or off same time as the melody note.....it seems like a "just let us play our way" type of approach.

Then I think ok I must be wrong here, the bass style generation is awesome anyway, can I just pull the bass line going on in the bass track into the melody somehow, or overlay the two when I print? Alas I haven't figured out a way to do that either. But even if I can, does this just basically mean I have no direct notation editing on chords?

Please help this noob guys smile.

Thanks,
Justin

MustLearnMore,

Welcome to the forum and to Band-in-a-Box!

I don't use notation much so others will come along with more comprehensive explanations.

In my opinion you're approaching how to use the program wrong.

Band-in-a-Box (BiaB) uses the five instrument tracks, styles and the chord sheet to create backing tracks. The program uses styles to direct what happens in the bass, piano, drums, guitar and strings tracks. Each time you press the regenerate control the program writes new information into the five instrument tracks unless the track is frozen.

BiaB gives you more control over what is played in the melody, soloist and audio tracks. The MIDI data you write in melody or soloist does not automatically get overwritten when you press the regenerate control. The MIDI data can influence the data BiaB places in the five backing tracks but the backing tracks follow the chord chart.

There are workarounds to the limitations I've given but, they are workarounds. Since I don't often use the notation screen I'm not that familiar with them and will defer to other users more familiar with the notation screen.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
