VERY cool song.
The guitar seems a little scooped - kind like what happens when a lower sized MP3 compression happens. It doesn't matter too much as the song fills but it does, sort of, build upper freq content.
Still COOL song and performance.

Lawrence,

This is a wonderful listen.

I love the arrangement, your singing is super, and your songwriting shines brilliantly.

These lyrics really captured my imagination and held it captive from start to finish. I found the words so very easy to relate to and the way that they carried me along on the musical current of your melody and backing is a real credit to your talent.

It's 5:20 am right now here in Melbourne and I cannot think of a better way to have started the day.

All the best,
Noel

This is subtle and finely written -those humorous lines about Harlequin the crow bring just the right touch of lightness.I was drawn in to the mindset - totally convincing.
I like the guitar blend -acoustic/electric. Would be nice to see which tracks you used.
The ending works well.
I found your vocals a bit less distinct on the chorus than verses -harmonies are good, I was struggling to hear the lyrics though.

Hi Lawrence. I absolutely love the song!!! And, I absolutely love the vocal!!! To me, the acoustic has a bit too much bite. I would use a bit more compression and tame the high end. I'm also not big on the electric in this song. I hear some kind of strings (maybe cello) or maybe a really warm pad. I think those things compete with a vocal which is stellar. Since you said you've struggled with the mix, I hate to complicate things more, but this is SUCH a BEAUTIFUL song!! The piano also works well with the vocal but again sounds a little strong...I've sometimes had that issue with some BIAB pianos. Maybe a midi supertrack would work with some decrease in velocity. Just some thoughts. You are a great writer, and this is a great song!! Take care. Greg

Hi Lawrence,

Beautiful song! The whole concept is marvelous. Your vocal is stellar!!! Only thing I might suggest is that the vocal gets a little lost on the choruses (guitar?) . Regardless, this is just so danged good. I listened to every note and second of it and not wanting it to end.

Excellent! Wishing you the best ...

Alan

Lawrence,

Always good to see you pop back in...

I remember this one. Such a cool song!

Your vocal is SO good. Little else is needed. The guitars are a bit busy (the combination of the two) and the high-EQ-ness (and busy-ness) of them competes with vocals. Something simpler would allows that vocal to Shine (as it should).

Man on man, are you a great singer. We've said that for years but just gotta throw it out again.

We also remember this...a wonderful song.

Frankly with a voice like yours and a write like this you could take the mix in a zillion directions and end up with a nice production.

Good to see you around!!!

J&B

FWIW, we have maybe a dozen songs that we revisited to tweak and ultimately, other than light mastering changes, ended up leaving them as is. Sometimes it's hard to re-capture (much less improve upon) what we lived with for so long during the original production. Add to that the oft said "we are our own worst critics" and I've about to decided to leave them alone...unless it's a complete rebuild.

Lovely. The instruments joining the band as the song went on lifted it. Maybe it's just my ears or phones, but the vocals were too quiet in the mix. Why? You have a good voice with a lot of character and (at least from the portions I could hear) were delivering a lyric well worth the time to listen. Was it an artistic decision to emphasize "vanish"? I wish you'd made a different one, but that's just one opinion.

If it's levels, "they" tell me it's better to cut than boost. Lower the backing (you might even try "bouncing" the entire band and laying vocals over it). If it's EQ (as other posters have suggested) then the same may hold true. Cut frequencies in the backing. Roll off unnecessary high and low end, and tamp down on what is interfering in the backing, rather than adding an EQ boost to the vocals.

Don't mean to send you back to mixing hell. I'd say nothing at all if I didn't think the song was worth the attention. If you've been at it for three years, surely you feel the same.

Lawrence,
Really nice written country style ballad.
Lyrics are clear and well digested. Musically very pleasing. This is very different from a few other tunes you shared, caught me by surprise.

I wish your "tweaking" hell will cool down for you! "Perfect is the enemy of good", at least that's what they say smile

Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful song!

To my ears the vocal is sitting in the mix exactly where it needs to be, doesn't need to be louder, that's for sure! Entire mix sounds good actually, I wouldn't change a thing.

Wow - this is incredible smile Your vocals are incredible and the progressions on this are perfect. You can really feel the emotion behind this one, both in the lyrics are your delivery of them. And when those harmonies came in - I was sold.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing!

You guys are always so supportive and it's always appreciated. I've been in sort of a depressed state trying to improve my mixing chops that I can't even write anymore. Having said that, I am working on a song that I think Janice would be perfect for some vocals on. When I get it "right" I will invite you guys to be a part of it if your interested. Peace

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
