Hello

I have only created 2 songs with chords.
I am not sure what happened but on the first song, I must have done something somewhere that stops any MIDI styles from playing on the PC.

I load the style, the top of the screen shows the instruments with the radio buttons next to them.
As soon as I play it, the instruments all change to Silent and only drums can be heard.

It is the same in the DXi Synth Settings. The instruments show as silent.

I spent an hour trying to find the reason but to no avail.

Does anyone know the answer to this problem perhaps?

I need to add the following info: (sorry cannot edits posts until my account has been reviewed)

I discovered that when I untick 'Enable Real Tracks' (In RealTracks Settings) the MIDI style works and the Instruments replace the Silent parts at the screen top.

But then the Misc styles do not work.

In my other song, the 'Enable Real Tracks' is ticked but ALL styles work.

Hi bern,

Welcome to the forums.

In answering the following, I'm assuming that you have a recent version of BIAB (say, version 2018 or 2019)

Before doing anything, under the "Options" menu that's found at the very top of the BIAB desktop, use "Save Preferences" to save your current set up so that it can be returned if needed.

Now...

1. Again, under the "Options" menu, try the "Return to factory settings" using the "MOST" option first off. If that doesn't work, use the "ALL" option.

2. If neither of the above worked, there are two files that can be deleted that will force BIAB to be in the same state as it was when initially installed on your computer.

First, close BIAB for this next procedure.

The files are "intrface.bbw" and "MySetup.dk" and are found under \bb\settings. They can be effectively deleted from BIAB's seeing them by renaming them to something like "intrface.bbw.old" and "MySetup.dk.old". Try this.

Once the changes are made, start BIAB.

When setting the audio and midi settings, go to the link below and set them as shown.

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=461558#Post461558

Any joy yet?

Lastly, if the problem is occurring in BIAB 64-bit, it's likely that BIAB 32-bit will still work. That is also worth trying at files created in either version are transferable between versions.

Regards,
Noel

The problem follows the song (.sgu) file.
It is the same on the 64 and 32 bit version 2019.

What setting controls what is shown in the radio button ribbon at the top of the screen?

For the problem song and MIDI (DIXIELAND 3) style it changes to:
Master Silence Silence Drums Silence Silence Melody Soloist Thru Audio.
Only drums play.

For other songs and MIDI (DIXIELAND 3)style, it is:
Master Bass Trombone Drums Banjo Reed Melody...

It is the same style used so why is it different?

Have you upgraded to the latest build?

The current build fro BIAB 2019 is #628 and it can be downloaded from the link below. The latest builds for other versions are also available at the same link.

https://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm

I've just loaded the song demo for midi style J_DIXI3.STY (which has the long name "Dixieland 3") and all is fine.

What version of BIAB are you using?

That is, the PROPak, the MEGAPak, the ULTRAPak, etc.

What is your version of BIAB?

When I read your post above, I found myself wondering if it might be an older version.

Something to try in the meantime, is to right-click on the chordsheet, select "Song Settings" and deactivate the two settings called "Allow Realtrack Substitution" and "Allow Style Aliases".

Regards,
Noel

Hello berntd,

Welcome to the forum and to Band-in-a-Box. Your last post indicates the SGU likely has become corrupt. Are you on a Windows or Mac computer? If you are on a Windows computer then your purchase also includes RealBand. You may be able to use RealBand to salvage the corrupt file.

Open RealBand.
Press "F3" or go to "File" > "Open ..."
Navigate to the corrupt SGU file and select it.
RealBand will take a few moments to open the file and then will create whatever MIDI tracks, RealTracks and loops that the file contains. Progress messages will flash across the top of the screen until all tracks are built.
Once all tracks are built, save the project under a new name. Older RealBand programs default to the SGU file type but RealBand 2019 defaults to the SEQ file type so you may have to change the file type.

Try the new file in Band-in-a-Box. Sometimes this works, sometimes it don't but it takes only a few minutes to try.

Hello Jim, and group...

Your instructions worked. The file works again with all styles after re-import from Realband.

Far out! I had no idea that this was an actual problem of corruption in the file. I was sure it was something obscure I must have done. Not the greatest experience for me as a beginner...

Thank you for your help.

Best regards
Bernt

Wooops, I spoke too soon.

It worked for a short while and as soon as I pressed F5, it started misbehaving again.
Since the re-import, every single bar now has a red line under the number and the beats are set to 4.

However, the style started not working again shortly after I looked at stuff by pressing F5.

This here version is 2019 (625) Windows 64bit.

EDIT: ----------------------------------------
Ok, this problem is reproducible over here.

Load song.
Select a Style with MIDI like Irish.

Play the song.

Select a bar further on and hit F5 on it. Top right, select a different style. Press Ok.

At this point, mine corrupts the originally selected MIDI style by setting some of the intsruments to Silent as already described.

Never to work again until I do the re-import via RealBand.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
